Japanese rock, or J-Rock, is a group of distinct styles that draw mainly from rock, and are native to Japan. There are many groups within this broad genre. A few styles include, but are definitely not limited to: heavy metal, indie (not to be confused with Indies, an English term usually meaning independent Visual-Kei or Angura-Kei artists) and punk. "Japanese rock has developed its own stylistic features" -- Doesn't mean it's justified as a genre tag. "J-rock" could mean anything from early Sigh or Magane (black metal) to AnCafe (sugary pop-rock).

Personally, I get mad at this tag because if I'm looking at a Japanese band's profile and I want to know what type of music they play, the tags are always "j-rock" and "jrock" and "japanese". That doesn't tell me anything about their music.

It could be anything from metallic twin-guitar stuff to blatant nu-metal chuggalooga to industrialized hard rock to radio-friendly pop-rock et cetera, et cetera.

I think it's really because J-pop and J-rock are like, the ONLY tags within the Japanese music industry. It's a shame, because apart from the national sound there's too much diversity in 'j-pop/j-rock' music for it to mean much anymore. I do agree with that. >_>
