"independent" and "pop" are NOT oxymorons, at least as far as music goes. all it means to be an independent band is that you're NOT on a label affliated with any of the big three (formerly four) major labels. there are plenty of independent labels that are large enough to release a popular record. that's all besides the point though - pop has come to describe a particular sound more than the degree of popularity. so indie pop is certainly a legitimate tag/genre.

'Pop' does indeed come from 'popular', and while most things that are 'popular' are indeed different from 'small, obscure, eccentric' that doesn't necessarily make the terms mutually exclusive. if it makes you feel better, pretend 'pop' refers to the bubble in soda-pop. its happier indie.
