Just to be clear on this point: Techniques are of course not the goal of music, they are a means to an end. A guitarist with a wider range of technique available has more possibilities to select from for his compositions, too. A better playing technique improves your performance, reduces fatigue and strain and preserves your health, also increasing your possibilities and keeping you from wasting time with inefficient and ineffective ways to do things, methods that just don't work as well. Therefore, all these aspects are important, and cannot be separated from each other: the technical aspects are a precondition for your composing and performance. Music is not unlike sports/athletics in some ways: a prodigious soccer player (for example) is also expected to master many different basic and advanced soccer techniques and needs to constantly train them, as well as more general skills and muscular strength.
