Dulcimers come in two variations: hammered dulcimers and Appalachian dulcimers (a.k.a. Mountain dulcimers), the latter belonging to the zither family of instruments. The hammered dulcimer is a stringed musical instrument with the strings stretched over a trapezoidal sounding board.
