Disco

Disco is a genre of dance-oriented music that originated in African American, gay and Hispanic American communities in 1970s. In what is considered a forerunner to disco style clubs in February 1970 New York City DJ David Mancuso opened The Loft, a members-only private dance club set in his own home. Most agree that the first disco songs were released in 1973, though some claim that Soul Makossa by Manu Dibango’s from 1972 to be the first disco record. I see many African-American artists & groups erroneously here. lastfm needs to create separate soul and funk music catagories to tag and place them. "Disco" music was dead by 1979 with the advent of Rapper's Delight commercial release and success. Rap/Hip-Hop killed disco. Ask any real musician and they'll tell you that all 4: R & B, Soul, Funk, and Disco music have a distinct sound and sometimes different drum times, tempo, and rhythms.

The cheesiest genre that ever existed.The big record labels made millions out of it from air headed people who went beserk as soon as they heard the nausiating beat associated with it.The music industry hieracy are still trying to push this beat onto us but without the success they had in the '70's peak.I wish they would stop trying & start concentrating on a more worth while genre / brand of music, personally.
