Dark metal

Dark metal is a term used to refer to bands of the heavy metal sub-genres who heavily use dark atmospheres, imagery or themes, oftentimes dealing with nature, depression, pantheism and death (in either a singular perspective or one that encompasses humanity as a whole), in their performance.     It makes a handy informal descriptor for bands that aren't simply black or gothic... just a shame that the bands that fall in that penumbra don't sound much like each other. So no it isn't a genre, but it's a useful way to demarcate a band that uses all those different sounds.
