The cowbell is a hand percussion instrument that is used in various styles of music— including many different genres of modern pop and rock music. It has been historically used by herdsmen to keep track of their cows, hence the name ‘cowbell’. Some of the most prominent bands to use a cowbell in their songs are Blue Oyster Cult, Queens of the Stone Age, Rage Against the Machine… among very many others.
The cowbell was the center-point of a famous Saturday Night Live skit called “More Cowbell”, which then created the pop culture meme of more cowbell.
