Brasil, officially in Portuguese: República Federativa do Brasil (the Federative Republic of Brazil[) is the largest country in South America and the only Portuguese-speaking country in the Americas, and the largest lusophone country in the world. It is the world's fifth largest country, both by geographical area and by population.
The music of Brazil encompasses various regional music styles influenced by African, European and Amerindian forms. After 500 years of history, Brazilian music developed some unique and original styles such as choro, sertanejo, brega, lalago, frevo, samba, maracatu, Bossa nova, MPB, Brazilian rock, axé and others.
Samba is without doubt the best known form of Brazilian music worldwide, although Bossa nova and other genres have also received much attention abroad. Brazil also has a growing community of modern/experimental composition, including electroacoustic music.
