Jazz is an American musical art form which originated around the beginning of the 20th century in Black communities in the Southern United States from a confluence of African and European music traditions. The style’s West African pedigree is evident in its use of blue notes, call-and-response, improvisation, polyrhythms, syncopation, and the swung note of ragtime. "Pop Music" was originally just a shorter way of saying "Popular Music" for sales charts and record stores. It also referred to stuff more commonly played on Radio or Jukebox, as opposed to heard only on special occasions like a trip to a Classical violin performance. Since the introduction of the phase "pop music", popular music has changed so much, with the artists labelled pop changing so much, that the term can hardly be considered a genre. The stuff on the "pop charts" has gone from Dinah Shore and Hank Williams to, well, well whatever is the "flavor of the month" this week. Though, sub-genres do make things a little less confusing.

And the reason one might assume that Popular Music is Pop. Is due to the term Popular Culture which is abbreviated Pop. So yes, technically the definition of Pop means Popular music. But their is a genre coined from the term Popular Music just to clarify. Which was indeed highly influenced by Jazz. So I concur with that and just on another note Pop later did evolve into other kinds of music. Teen music basically. Just like R&B later evolved to contemporary R&B. What The Ink Spots, Frank Sinatra and many other are is TRADITIONAL Pop. Franky Avalon did indeed create the teen pop. I don't envy him particularly for that. And more or less mediocre. So that should answer all your confused comments on pop.

Pop doesn't mean popular music. That would make Mozart pop, which doesn't make sense. We should not be categorising genres based on details extrinsic to the actual music. A genre should be defied by qualities within the music itself, by styles and conventions, not its public reception or popularity. To do so would be fatuous and utterly useless. Norah Jones sings Jazz influenced Pop because her songs have all the characteristics of pop songs; verses, choruses, relatively short lengths, tonality and the expression of an idea in a non-esoteric way. However her style, like that of Sinatra or Cole or Simone, is derived from jazz, especially the instrumentation. Ergo, Jazz influenced Pop.
