I agree that different people like different music and just because you don't like it doesn't mean it's "bad." I like indie music because it was recorded not with proficiency but with something to say. I like noisy, cacophonous songs. I also like simple, fairly quiet ones because those often have more literary impact. I like clever lyrics. I like anthemic chants interspersed with wildly overblown instrumentals. The Mountain Goats, The Futureheads, Wolf Parade, Sunset Rubdown, The Weakerthans, Islands, The Unicorns, Modest Mouse, Ugly Casanova, The Decemberists, The Golden Dogs, etc. are all bands I love. What I don't like is when the creation of music is confined to the "popular" musicians who use synthesizers to correct their voice and people in the studio polish up the song so much that it can never be replicated live. That strikes me as soulless and base because they are trying to convince you that they can sing when in fact they cannot.
