If you were born in 1972 (one of the absolute best years in Rock N Roll), join our cool gang! We'll be nice, promise.

Some interesting things that happened in 1972:

January 5 - U.S. President Richard Nixon orders the development of a space shuttle program.

January 30 - Bloody Sunday: British Army kills 13 unarmed Roman Catholic/Nationalist civil rights marchers in Derry, Northern Ireland.

February 1 - First scientific hand-held calculator (HP-35) is introduced (price $395).

June 17 - Watergate scandal: Five White House operatives are arrested for burglarizing the offices of the Democratic National Committee.

August 12 - The last U.S. ground troops are withdrawn from Vietnam.

September 4 - The first episode of The Price Is Right is hosted on CBS by Bob Barker.

November 29 - Atari kicks off the first generation of video games with the release of their seminal arcade version of Pong, the first game to achieve commercial success.

December 11 - Apollo 17 lands on the Moon.

Albums released in 1972:

Allman Brothers - Eat A Peach
David Bowie - Space Oddity
Eumir Deodato - Prelude
Frank Zappa - Just Another Band from L.A.
Frank Zappa - Waka/Jawaka
Funkadelic - America Eats Its Young
Jackson Browne - Jackson Browne
Jimmy Smith - Root Down
John Lennon - Some Time In New York City
King Harvest - Dancing In the Moonlight
Lou Reed - Transformer
War - The World Is a Ghetto

In the '70s, it was all about the music. Bands such as Funkadelic were able to open up your funky mind with no interference from the government or self-righteous assholes. There was the usual record label BS, but the musicians, by and large, only cared about the music. In many cases they cared fanatically and would not bend to label pressure. Frank Zappa is the prime example. Most importantly, there was a huge market for genuine singer-songwriters, such as Neil Young, David Bowie, America, Carole King, Harry Chapin, Carly Simon, Jim Croce, Roberta Flack...the list goes on. I treasure my memories of hearing real music on the radio.

Great to see Bowie listed, but what about that other British great who had their first album out in 1972, namely Roxy Music! And don't forget Stevie Wonder's great output that year too.

*throws entire music folder "1972" into Winamp* I miss my tricycle, and hanging out in the summer under the tree in grandma's yard, with a bottle of Coke and my transistor radio.

Hello everyone, born in August of 1972. Where I live 1972 is remembered by many in the community when Hurricane Agnes hit and did major damage. I came crashing into the world a little bit after that. lol. Anyways... just saying hello to all the others born in 1972

Hey people. Just thought I'd say hi. Nice to meet a good bunch like yourselves all born in the same year as me. As far as the music goes, I'm cool with the top 10. Coldplay don't entirely suck gnarly (they're really quite good live and you gotta love Parachutes) and Abba, from the Connected Artists, will always have a place in my heart, although I will forever give Mamma Mia a very wide berth). Maybe we can shake it up a little more though. What say you all?

The "connected artists" for this group represent music in 1972 as closely as possible...and yes, that year was a fantastic one for great music.
