Group for The Mass Tagger App

A java based app for quick multi tagging. Currently you can tag multiple items from similar artist, top tracks and top albums lists and there's a free form tagger which takes in a list of artists separated by newlines.

It should hopefully work on multiple Operating systems however I've developed and tested it on windows so that's the platform I'd most recommend using it on. I have tested it on ubuntu linux as well and with the execption of a few small GUI issues everything works. Results may vary elsewhere.

Remember with great tagging power comes great responsibility, I made this so that people can create tag collections quickly and easily not for spamming.

Feedback would be much appreciated.

How to Run:

Ensure you have an up to date Java Runtime Environment (JRE 6 Update 18 at time of writing) and then extract the archive to a folder and run LastFMmassTagger.jar. In Windows this should be just a case of double clicking the file or "java -jar LastFMmassTagger.jar" from the command prompt/ terminal

I have played something like 800 different Britney Spears tracks. How can I mass tag them as 'britney' using this?

It should be enough to go to the Oracle Java site and download and install the latest version. @headey: The metadata meant are the ID3 tags used for artist and track (and album) that your media player shows for local MP3 tracks on your HD and uses for identifying a track in its database. So that File DropBox for quick tagging looks up the ID3 metadata for each track dragged & dropped into it from your local library list or "table" (e.g. from Windows Explorer) and tags all files with the new tags that you have chosen for them.

Hi friends. Trying to set the tagger up again on a new W8 OS. How do I know which 'Java Virtual Machine' to install? This Wikipedia site lists many????

I don't understand the "File DropBox for tagging music on hd" ~~~~~ & it says "Please ensure the files have correctly metadata..." What is this? -can anyone show an example of the format required? ~~~~~~~~~ "...drag directly onto the table" -I don't see a table. Is it broke or do I need to do something? (windows XP )

@gimmejazz I've rather lost the will to bother looking these days. Is it a CBS plot or honest lack of resources I wonder? ~~~~~~~ Plus, I'm spending more time listening to unheard tracks from existing artists & not going back so much so I'm not actually sure what I attempted last.

    @silverlage > > decode the data (from dGFn...) = tag:"tripfunk" or tag:"dubfunktronica true" or tag:"dubfunk true" or tag:"trip step" or tag:"funk step" or tag:"cornrow breaks" or tag:"trip-house" or tag:"tripfunk" or tag:"scatter funk" or tag:"dubtekstep" or tag:"Dubfunktronica" or tag:"Dubfunktronica" opt:discovery|true opt:mainstr|0 ~~~~~~ does that look possible?

New question. There is something that makes me click on 'Add New User' instead of just clicking on the field to Change User! Is there any way of editing the duplicate names out of the dropdown menu?

The 'User Tag Library' isn't working quite as I'd expected. First attempt I couldn't get the 'Tag from Searches' tab gets populated with anything ~~~ Second attempt, (closed & reopened MassTagger) -searched for tag 'gimme' but it didn't give many results ; then 'gimme sum' -not all the tags expected, but as an example 'gimme sum horn' says 597 results. Right clicking > Show globalised tracks = about 50 tracks ~~~~~~~~~~~ The only way to maximmise the the number of tracks seems to be to type in a user known to have the tag, then double clicking the tag(or RC & select)

@gimmejazz: Please have a look at the upper screenshot of the Mass Tagger, the tracks with blue background are the highlighted ones, the other ones are not highlighted and would not be tagged after clicking on the "Tag" button. @ RomanJG: It seems that the user login is not saved on Windows 7, so you have to repeat the login procedure everytime you start it. At least I have to do this on Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 with Java Build 1.7.0_09-b05, on Windows XP it works fine. Maybe it is possible to start LastFMmassTagger.jar with admin rights or something similar, so my username would be saved somewhere.

@gj -I'm following hj's instructions & it seems to be working ok. I don't understand your descriptions of 'pull up' or 'prompt to run the list'. ~~~~~~~ I'm using XP, idki this makes a difference?

You have to highlight the complete search results page first, e.g. with key combination Ctrl-A so that the app knows which tracks of the search results you want to tag. Then call the next page with the small button in the lower right corner and proceed till the end.

I have made an *. ico file from the group logo recently that you can use for a Windows desktop icon (right-click it, choose "Properties" from the menu, then "Change symbol"). You can download it here, and the original *.png file, too. maz35 might include it in the next version as well of course: ;-)

OK, thanks thanks thanks hjb I think I finally got my head round it! (&maybe my java wasn't updated before...) . I didn't even notice anything called zip this time, it all opened after doubleclicking the 'LastFMmassTagger' file in the folder((I think)). And thanks thanks thanks maz35 for an amazing application.

@headey: you have to extract the files from the zip archive first. To do that on Windows XP you can highlight the zip file and choose "Extract to..." either from its context menu (right-click) or from the folder "File" menu. Then you will be asked where the single files in the archive should be stored, so you should choose a folder (e.g. c:\program files\Lastfm\ or create a new one. The extraction process will create a new subfolder named as the zip archive with all single files in it. If you click on the *.jar file, the application should appear and also call a page in your browser at the same time (so you have to be online) asking for permission to use your account data.
