Take an artist, any artist, with loads of great albums. Picture that catalog and all its high points. Now imagine me telling you that that very artist has yet to release their best record. Chances are, you wouldn't believe me. I wouldn't believe me. But here we have PJ Harvey who, after two decades of releasing great - even classic, in some cases - records, has released what could very likely go down as her signature record. It's the music. It's the singing. It's the writing. It's the strange ornamentation. Everything comes together here to form a solid, memorable work that ups the ante for anyone trying to make a serious album made to move and inspire. Let England Shake is one odd album, but for me it's become a necessary one.
All and Everyone: „Death was everywhere, in the air and in the sounds coming off the mounds of Bolton's Ridge. Death's anchorage. When you rolled a smoke or told a joke, it was in the laughter and drinking water it approached the beach as strings of cutters, dropped into the sea and lay around us.“
Michicant: „Aiming and it sunk and we were drunk and we had fleshed it out nose up in the globes, you never know if you are passing out no it wasn’t maiden-up, the falling or the faded luck hung up in the ivory, both were climbing for a finer cause love can hardly leave the room with your heart.“
“Imagine sitting in front of your therapist and discussing life’s miserable journeys, wandering through both the past and the present – the good, the bad and, mostly, the very ugly – absorbing these memories, accepting them, and letting them take you over ‘like a little drop of ink in a glass of water’. This is the experience of listening to The National.” "Perfect summations of what it means to be young, deeply romantic, but also feel terribly old at the same time; terribly cynical about the caverns of unknowing and lurking tragedy that surround every relationship, waiting to destroy it. This is the experience of listening to High Violet" The band tackles different subjects throughout their songs: from stories about nervous love to isolated and haunting pieces about friendship to songs about regret, commiseration, and sorrow. 'Terrible Love' for instance, it isn't necessarily so bad, it's just about being overwhelmed by this emotion of love, whatever that is, or if you did something wrong to someone you love. There's a lot of stress and anxiety on there. But the music, even if rarely ‘happy’, is almost always hopeful. Therefore, the songs do not leave you feeling down and downright depressed; they give you hope – hope that someday you will overcome your miseries, sorrows and regrets. For me, The National’s tracks are pieces of comfortable sadness. My ranking list: Boxer, Alligator, High Violet, Cherry Tree, Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers, The Virginia EP, The National
Vanderlyle Crybaby Geeks: „Man it’s all been forgiven Swans are a-swimming I’ll explain everything to the geeks Hanging from Chandeliers Same small woe At your heels.“
The Curse: „Long ago on the ship She asked why pyramids He said "Think of them as an immense invitation." She asks "Are you cursed?" He says "I think that I'm cured." Then he kissed her and hoped That she'd forget that question.“
Too Afraid To Love You: „All those sleepless nights And all those wasted days I wish loneliness would leave me But I think he's here to stay What more can I do I'm wringing myself dry And I can't afford to lose One more teardrop from my eye.“
Goodbye England (Covered in Snow): „But a friend of mine says it's good to hear That you believe in love even if set in fear well I'll hold you there brother and set you straight I wont make believe that love is frail And willing to break.“
Restore Me: „You dream a lot about the past And you dream that it's never gonna last So you wanna give your love to your sister and your friends You wanna give your love to the one who's faced in the end You want it all but you gotta give You want it all but you gotta forgive Restore me, Restore me, now and make me sane Restore me; Restore me, now I gotta give up your ghost.“
Only The Ocean: „After all this time after all these seasons After your one decision to go to the water for reason Now it’s only the ocean and you After all these lines will all be erased soon They go out with the tide Then come back with the waves It’s only the ocean and you.“
For The Summer: „Can I come home for the summer? I could slow down for a little while Get back to loving each other Leave all those long and lonesome miles behind Through the years I have learned Some things worth the tellin' And you'd be right in guessin' That each and every lesson they were hard won.“
Walk With You: „You paint a picture of love in pain I don't have time in what time remains What I have just tried to explain flew by you What can I do with a heart of steel I would impart what I've come to feel Love is the answer and It is real I'll always be there beside you.“
Animal Arithmetic: „Get it on, get it on Fuck it, let's go and live Get it on, bring it on Fuck it, break out and be I see you're colourful I see you in the trees I see you're spiritful You're in the breeze.“
Out Go The Lights: „If you lean any harder That window breaks at the bone And when that light turns back again You will remember the way They fall for you like a brick Oh but nobody loves you Or woos you when you're down or kicked.“
Cold War: „So you think I'm alone? But being alone's the only way to be When you step outside You spend life fighting for your sanity If you wanna be free? Below the ground's the only place to be Cause in this life You spend time running from depravity.“
I think this album is just awesome from start to end. It is a conceptual album and the music is incredibly driven, soulful, raw, emotive, dark, haunting, desolate, and undeniably beautiful. Justin's lyrics are bizaare, poetic, abstract, deep and heartbreakingly intense in the best way imaginable - there's enough audible intention behind them. I will admit, the very first time I heard him sing; I was a little thrown off by his style and use of falsetto - It took me about two listens before I was fully in love. Despite of its loneliness atmosphere - surprisingly, it never leaves me feeling sad, somehow, almost always uplifted...
Re: Stacks : "there's a black crow sitting across from me; his wiry legs are crossed and he's dangling my keys he even fakes a toss whatever could it be that has brought me to this loss?"
This music heals. I know that these songs are here to stay.
It is a quite different from previous albums but after a few listens I realized it’s a very good album in its own, special way. I still love On and On the most, though. Jack is just such a good guy and his eco-concerts are very inspirational, no doubt about it … From now on everybody should go green! :)
All At Once : "all at once, the world can overwhelm me there's almost nothing that you could tell me that could ease my mind
we keep asking ourselves are we really strong enough? there's so many things that we got too proud of"
Yes, this album was/is maybe one of this years‘ big hype but it is made with sense of musical versatility, and it works very well – Eno‘s hands are very visible here. And who just doesn’t love the melody of Joe Satriani’s Viva La Vida? :D
Death and All His Friends : "all winter we got carried away over on the rooftops let's get married all summer we just hurried so come over, just be patient, and don't worry"
In Donavon’s third album, he finally found himself. That means this is the chillest record this year for me. You can imagine yourself lying on the beach, drinking mojito and enjoying time with your friends during listening to this album. It always puts you in the good mood no matter what the weather is like ;)
Life, Love & Laughter : "I’m lookin for life, love and laughter everything in between and what happens after what happens after? "
I Love You And Buddha Too is one of my favourite songs of 2008, it’s catchy, very simple tune with quite provocative lyrics but I really like it, maybe because I feel it in similar way like Mason along with Jack sings.
"why do some people say that there is just one way to love you, god, and come to you? we are all a part of you
you are un-nameable you are unknowable all we have is metaphor that‘s what time and space are for"
More heavier, atmospherical and psychedelic. It seems to me that Xavier wanted to capture his concert performances to this record and he did it very well. Home is one of the best songs in 2008 according to my ears.
"places we roam and people we meet some connections are strong and some a little weak one or two or three or four or maybe five or six or more
I recognize my health the things that I have been dealt places that I've roamed feelings I've had and things that I know home, I'm home."
Turning into making radio popfolk songs might not be the right thing but if you can do it with some clever and smart melodies and lyrics, why not? :) She’s pretty, she has wonderful voice + her guitar and surfing skills. What a great combination! ;)
my friend sakspazz (sakmaz) posted this in the introductions of the Surf Vibes group, and it was just too good to let slip between the digital cracks. enjoy.
My name is Sakmazmemainmazzoe or something along those lines. I like this place, other places, lying, kites, you, and throwing babies against walls.
I don't surf, actually. So why would I belong to this group? You see...the ocean draws me in..like, that salty, unhealthy, unfriendly, murky, cold mass of water (with dead people and fish in) seems really enjoyable.
I like it when turds float around too. I like to chase floating turds - I just call 'em floaturds - across small waves..whilst they bounce on the..lip, like little happy brown surfers with corn and bumhair for hair. I swim particularly well when there's a bunch of boogie-kids right next to me, crunching it out with 'em plastic bags for boards. I like to pull down my pants at them and shout "candy's right here, kid".
My favorite pastime in the ocean would be (semi-)drowning. I totally relish that feeling when an ol' 29 footer hits you on your chin, and you begin suffocating with terrific intensity. You start having trans-vivid dreams about what it would be like in an ocean hell, filled with seaweedjellyanimals ass-inating you.
I never had a surfboard, but I wish I did. You see, it serves as a valuable weapon against little kid rats with those inflatable sea-tires, and old people with g-strings. I can surf on, in, and over their heads and hopefully cut their heads off in the process. Then I'd mount them on my surfboard - perfectly, to such an extent that people would think it's a shrine and start to follow my surf prophecies.
I really enjoy surf-music too. Slide guitar, slide drums, backslide bass, and slime vocals: these are the inspiring elements of surf-music-ism. If you combine them, add a little pepper, some parsley, a whole lot of beaver, boobs, whiskey, and floaturds, you would rock it like 1993.
So please join me as I embrace the surf water like it was my own liquid child. I love and will love and sometimes hate the ocean, but that doesn't change the fact that I'm not a surfer. Let's surf it out, or imagine that we can, unto heaven's lips itself.
