This group is dedicated to the mondegreen, past and present. Mondegreens are novel lyrics that people hear in place of the intended lyrical content. (Or more briefly, "misheard lyrics.")

Mondegreens and misheard lyrics

Mondegreen is a term coined by Sylvia Wright after she discovered that she had misheard lyrics to a poem.

The lyrics that everyone else heard were "Oh they've slain the Earl of Murray and laid him on the green."
The lyrics she heard were "slain the Earl Amurray and Lady Mondegreen."

Examples occur all the time. Some artists are not the most precise in their dictation (yes, I'm looking at you, Bruce Springsteen) and there are many modern examples. However, it isn't new and there are many many old ones as well.

So if you have a mondegreen - it doesn't have to be one you heard - please join up.

The "Boat, Rudder, Strange ... Mountain" interpretation of "Pull Harder on the Strings of your Martyr" by Trivium needs to be mentioned. Also, what about trans-language mondegreens? "Yatta" into English, "Dragostei din Tei" into Japanese, "Kalluri Vaanil" into English?

Well, I was looking for it and couldn't find it. Thought it must be time to make it.
