ringwraith10: Every metal fan for themselves, although there seems to be a minimal consensus (there's no debate about thrash, death, black and doom metal). Nowadays, pragmatically speaking, it is Wikipedia, and they again go by journalistic usage. Unfortunately, there is no committee consisting of university-trained musicologists versed in the metal scene who could authoritatively decide such pressing issues ;-)
I'd say opera metal (or operatic metal) is defined by the presence of operatic vocals. Avantasia, Ayreon and Aina are metal operas (although "metal musicals" would arguably be a more fitting description), but are made in a power/symphonic/progressive metal style otherwise. That's not the same as "opera metal". Symphonic metal without operatic vocals isn't opera metal either, so the terms are not synonymous or exchangeable.

Actually ...most people (and musicians) say that opera (and operactic) metal is a part from the ganer symphonic metal which means this tag is ....let's say useless !!! I am not very sure why people are tagging different elements from one genre ^ ^
Opera Metal doesn't exist. Another misconception of music... Amongs those who know what they are talking about... we classify it as Symphonic Metal. Thanks a lot. And I see that my comment is so freakin true... especially when I see how Avantasia are in the top artists... They made a metal opera... true. But there is NO KIND OF OPERATIC VOCALS ON THEIR RECORDS. And what about Epica... Symphonic Metal with pop-opera influenced vocals... Nothing to do with any REAL opera ever written. So... shit tag. That's it :)
