The band's music draws from an eclectic mix of genres, including Americana, blues, alternative rock, rockabilly, and punk.

    The Kills are an duo formed by American vocalist Alison "VV" Mosshart and British guitarist Jamie "Hotel" Hince that rose to public recognition at the dawn of the hype surrounding the genre explosion of the early 2000s. Mosshart had been in the Florida punk band Discount and Hince in British rock band Scarfo.

    so, our mate Quinny is only young - born in 1987, he missed out on the majority of the whole thing that defined most of our childhoods. lucky him, you might say, and you're probably right... but there's a large part of me that feels the need to educate our young friend about those heady, carefree days of yore...

    to this extent, i've made the boy a mix... that became two mixes... that's now expanded to a hundred song playlist, dredging up a number of long forgottens that even i hardly gave time for 14 years ago...

    inspiration came from a number of Shine compilations, as well as free CDs from the likes of Select, Vox, NME and Melody Maker still knocking around my bedroom. and of course, my own dodgy library of near hit singles and nomark albums i've gathered together in roughly 15 years of never throwing anything away.

    i remember back in the day, beyond the obvious stuff carried forward on such compilations, some of the more interesting / obscure / flash in the pan…
  • Tuesday Ten: Forgotten bands

    This week I'm going to turn my attention once again to the recent past. To look at bands that for one reason or another are "forgotten", or have "dropped off the radar". Either they are now little more than a footnote in musical history, or they never got the recognition they deserved, or they used to be good and fans have since deserted them in droves. There are examples of all of these in this list - and as always, I would welcome additional suggestions...

    (And yes, for once, I've managed to post it here on a Tuesday!)

    Here, perhaps, is a perfect example of a band fêted by the press for a short while and then ignored. Something of an ecstatic reaction met Six By Seven back in the '90s when sprawling first single European Me was released, and this continued with album The Things We Make.
