The years have come and gone, and yet for some odd reason I still receive requests for my 'Best Of' journal entries in Heavy Metal, as well as several other genres. Why I still receive these requests I have no idea, but I've relented on being an e-seclusionist curmudgeon and eternally lazy long enough to post my Best in Heavy Metal of 2012 list. I hope whatever poor soul or bored last.fm troll that reads this dated meandering of metal finds something that they haven't otherwise heard or thought to listen to since '12. Unlike the previous journal entry, many if not most of the reviews here are sourced from other writers, webzines, and various publications as noted at the bottom of the review. Also, I encourage any suggestions for albums released in 2012 that I've omitted as it's painfully obvious from my list that I can't possibly listen to everything out there.

Mar 26 2013, 13h53 por wrathchild88Well here it is, the top 50 that no-one gives a crap about. Mine. Despite the numberings, it's designed as more of a general upward trend, rather then being 'set in stone' or something because the places will probably change slightly with every listen. Scores range from about 75/100 to 100/100, with a very steep curve up through the 70s up to the mid 80 scores if they were given marks out of 100. I really enjoyed all the albums that made this top 50.
But first, here are some albums that didn't quite make it, along with some EPs, compilations and a live album that I also enjoyed:
Hypnosia rereleased some of their earlier demos under the title “Horror Infernal”. Full of dirty thrashy goodness. There are some different songs to those released on the EP and LP, but also quite a few different versions of songs. If you want to bang your head, this is what you need.
Mekong Delta rerecorded a lot of old songs with the current (seemingly stable!) lineup and released them as “Intersections”. …

Jan 7 2013, 2h37 por BromadrosisHi, boys and girls.
Basically, this is a list of the releases from 2012 that I enjoyed the most out of the few hundred that I heard. I didn't go for a psychologically satisfying number, I'm just throwing them all out there and you can decide for yourselves which of these are the best 20 or 30 or whatever the fuck have you.
They are somewhat ranked, however do not read too much into this, because every last one of these is recommended listening for anyone into, well let's just call it extreme music for want of a better term. And but also, when comparing apples and oranges it really all depends on which particular fruit you happen to be in the mood for anyway.
And please note: This is NOT everything I liked. This is everything I liked the MOST.
Also, don't get too anal about genre denominations. The adjectives are there for the benefit of people who might be new to some of this shit :-P
Obviously, some genres are more represented than others. …
Jan 3 2013, 19h15 por Mrozikos667So, yet another issue of the Year End Summary is about to amuse and bewilder you. It was an awesome year for music, and it was also a totally magnificent year for my other passion, cinema, but that's not the place to speak about it. Anyway, for quite some time I've had this thought that this summary business is kinda stupid – suddenly in December you realise how many potentially awesome albums you've missed and then you desperately try to make up for it by listening as much as you can, neglecting your work, studies, family, girlfriend, cat or whatever you've got to care for. Not that I intend to drop doing this or something, I guess I just like doing pointless stuff nobody cares about. Oh well, I start to blabber here. So, let's get ready to rumble!
This or the Apocalypse – Dead Years (The Worst Album of the Year and The Disappointment of the Year; it's actually really, really sad how this band managed to stoop so low after two great releases...)
Dez 29 2012, 22h50 por rui_santosHere is my list of 2012's favourite albums. The list has 30 albums (full-lenghts and only original material released in this year), ordered from 1º to 30º. Below there's a brief comment about each one.
1º Enslaved - RIITIIR
No, it's not a rule that when Enslaved release a new album they have to be on top of best albums of that year, but what can i do? After a great album like Axioma Ethica Odini, they returned even stronger. RIITIIR has not an immediate impact considering the structure and complexity of the songs. You have to invest emotionally in this album, that's for sure. Once you do it, you'll be immensely rewarded with an amazing musical journey. A song like Roots of the Mountain summarizes perfectly the quality and perfection of RIITIIR. Everything on this album is perfect - the arrangements, the vocals (better than ever), the production and the performance. Album of the year! Well done Enslaved, one more time!
