Another CD set of songs which have inspired Nick Cave over the years is going on the market. This is the third this year and the fifth overall. The first two were Original Seeds way back in 1998 and the follow up Original Seeds, Volume 2 in 2004. I would rate the first Original Seeds very highly just because there was nothing like it before but now that is very different.
Original Seeds - Track listing:
1. Tim Rose - Long Time Man
2. Gene Vincent & His Blue Caps - Cat Man
3. Leonard Cohen - Avalanche
4. Karen Dalton - Katie Cruel
5. The Sensational Alex Harvey Band - Hammer Song
6. Tom Jones - Weeping Annaleah
7. The Loved Ones - Sad Dark Eyes
8. Scott Walker - The Big Hurt
9. John Lee Hooker - Tupelo Blues
10. Lefty Frizzell - The Long Black Veil
11. Johnny Cash - The Folk Singer
12. Odetta - Another Man Done Gone
Nov 6 2008, 23h32 por p7389This year I've had the great fortune of being able to see Leonard Cohen live twice; once in Helsingborg in the summer, and then later in Göteborg in the autumn. I don't for a second regret the money spent, and the time invested in this - the experience made up for that tenfold.
The Helsingborg concert was at a open air venue, and it was an absolutely beautiful summer night. I know this word is thrown around a lot in descriptions of Cohen's current tour, but it truly was a magical evening. Leonard seemed so at ease with himself, and eager to give the performance his all. He treated his material with respect, but at the same time he put it in proper perspective, and had a great time with it. What I remember most vividly from this night is Anthem, and how this track was introduced. I always liked this track, but after that night, I absolutely adore it.
In Göteborg, the experience was somewhat diminished since I knew what to expect, and as excellent as the jokes and interludes were…
Nov 3 2008, 12h15 por BlackCoffeeDuckWell here's another journal about Nick Cave. I know I just wrote one but found a couple more things.
Mojo Magazine are asking readers to vote for the best Nick Cave albums which which means The Boys Next Door, The Birthday Party, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Grinderman and even the soundtracks if you want to, I guess. The Top Ten with be published in I'm guessing the next issue which will be the January 2009 issue which isn't next month. This is going to be in the How To Buy feature, Check it out here: http://www.mojo4music.com/blog/2008/10/how_to_buynick_cave.html
In the current issue with Leonard Cohen on the cover there is a Cohen Covered free CD with Avalanche from The Bad Seeds first album, off course. I saw the doco about Lenny the other day called I'm Your Man. Cave is talking about the first time hearing him back in his home town of Warracknabeal and the album was Songs of Love and Hate which of course is the album that has Avalanche on it.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor has a song named Static. It contains an eerie recording of an Evangelical priest talking on long wave radio. He talks about the fate of those who have seen the real face of "God". Some end up in mental institution, and some, like the preacher himself and his followers, reach salvation by becoming "Godmen, Godwomen, and Godchildren."
I don't buy any of this, but the song helps me to put the three prophets of the religion Dylano-Coheno-Reedianism in context. It is as if the prophets have seen the reality -what the preacher refers as the face of God- from somewhere we have not been able to - perhaps from the Tower of Song- and reacted differently. Bob Dylan saw it in an early age, and shouted it out loud, never loosing his youthful anger, and self esteem. Lou Reed on the other hand, was probably high when he saw it, and chose not to tell what he saw, but make jokes about it, hoping we get it somehow.
