Just saw him in London with the Czeck Robert Balza trio. This was at the Pizza Express Jazz Club. Because it is relatively small the atmosphere was as I love it best, intimate and personal. The beautiful personality of Abercrombie came fully across. After so many years of playing and touring he still clearly enjoys what he is doing - and that is infectious. The Robert Balza Trio, as I gradually found out to my surprise, I had seen four years ago in Praque. After coming home from that trip I listened to the different jazz CDs I had bought in that beautiful old city. Theirs was and still is my favourite. Playing as a guest of that trio, though he was clearly the "leader" and revered by the other players as one could see, he did show how versatile he is. It was a different Abercrombie than I know from his recordings (of which the two in a duo with Ralph Towner are my all-time favourites). Though they made a record together to which I haven't listened to yet, I have to add.
