Hole's early stuff is really astounding because of how gnarly it is, but there's also a lot of beauty juxtaposed there. Where Courtney talks about the retarded girl being abused at school, she also alludes to ancient Roman poems ("As shines the moon among the lesser fires", a line from Horace), as if to infer that this "retard girl" is actually on a different level entirely from everyone around her. "See the retard girl, staring at the sun / What does she see? / I hope she doesn't see me". It's great stuff, and the mixture of the filthy and the celestial is what makes Hole's early recordings so compelling.
