Picture a band with punk-rock, pop, metal and emo influences crammed into a Ferrari racing down the highway…and the car is on fire. That would be Winnipeg’s own, High Five Drive. Formed in 2001, High Five Drive is the hardest working band in Winnipeg and a local institution. Fronted by the busiest guy in local music, Greg Rekus, High Five Drive has spent the last five years coming into their own and showcasing their unique brand of high-energy melodic punk-rock to fans across Canada and all over the world thanks to distribution deals in Canada, Japan, and soon to be Europe and more.
With a sound influenced by A Wilhelm Scream, Belvedere, and Strung Out, High Five Drive has built a strong following from the ground up with relentless touring across Canada and Europe, local radio play and four international releases. Seeing High Five Drive on stage is a life-changing experience in and of itself. Known for their super-charged, disregard-for-personal-safety, high-intensity live shows, High Five Drive has had shared the stage with The Mad Caddies, Comeback Kid, Slick Shoes, Protest the Hero and Satanic Surfers to name a few. They just recently finished a tour across Europe to a wide and positive reception. Their fans are not only going to their lives shows to show their support, there is also a considerable internet following. Though the band website receives its fair share of attention on its own, CDBaby.com and Interpunk.com sells their full-length albums, and their MySpace and PureVolume profiles boast over 100,000 total song-plays combined.
Somewhere between their frantic energy, meaningful lyrics, catchy hooks and tireless work ethic, the band has fine-tuned their sound and grown into their own over the course their first two releases, EPs, and various compilations. Currently our heroes are heading to the studio to record for their much anticipated third release in Winnipeg. The newest record is being recorded with Winnipeg sound-booth expert, John Paul Peters, who founded High North Records, and credits include working with Comeback Kid and Every New Day. News of the new record has already garnered label interest in Canada and across Europe. The album will showcase the broadening spectrum of High Five Drive’s growth over the course playing together, touring and recording with a more mature sound, well-developed and thoughtful lyrics, and a more honest and confident approach to song writing.
What remains for Winnipeg’s fearless reigning champions? More touring? Definitely. World domination? Probably. High Five Drive’s plan of attack includes spreading the word of High Five Drive, recording the new album and then more relentless touring across Canada and Europe to showcase their energetic live experience. High Five Drive is also entertaining several different label’s interests, so look for them in your local music store in FALL 2008.
