Who needs friends when have books?

Would you rather stay at home with a good book than go out and pretend to be interested in banalities? Do you prefer a beautifully parsed sentence than a conversation? Do you prefer to broaden your knowledge and interests than amass more friends?

If your answer is 'yes' to all those questions, then you will feel at home at this group.

"I devour more and more books! They are the only friends that I can take with me!" - Gustav Mahler

I looked up the book you are talking about and my mother has always pestered me into reading Murakami, so I will go along with your recommendation. What other magic realism can I recommend you? Again, all I've read in this genre is Latin-American writers. There are other lesser known treasures, like Donoso, out there. Two of my favourites are 'Pedro Páramo' by Juan Rulfo and 'A Brief Life' by Juan Carlos Onetti. If these guys hadn't written in the 40s and 50s, there would be no Garcia Marquez.

Buy 'The Obscene Bird of Night' by José Donoso. Knocks the work of other magic realists into a hatted cock.

Jenny: you'll just have to keep trying to read 'Portrait of the Artist' until it starts making sense. :p
