  • Record Store Day 2010 - Success!

    Abr 17 2010, 20h03 por PhamilyJules

Today is the third annual Record Store Day (it's basically like Christmas for music nerds). I've spent the past three Record Store Days in different states. In 2008 I was at Mr. Cheapo in Mineola, New York. While visiting Newport, RI with Rachel in 2009 I was able to visit Music Box (on Thames). This year I'm in Chicago for graduate school and I decided to visit three record stores to celebrate RSD 2010.

Last night I stood in line at Permanent Records, which was kind enough to open its doors from midnight to 2am. I was the 18th person in line, and it was a major bummer because disks like The Flaming Lips - "Dark Side of the Moon" LP and Doors/Rolling Stones/John Lennon 45s were sold out by the time it was my turn in line. They didn't have the Built to Spill 7'' or the Beastie Boys "super surprise" unlabeled 12'' that I wanted either. However, I did walk away with the special 2-LP Pavement album "Quarantine the Past" (there's only 1000 pressings) as well as Rodriguez's "Inner City Blues" 7'' (1500 pressings), so I was happy about that. This one guy ahead at the front of the line basically bought 1 of everything and walked out of the record store saying "Look everyone, I got all the good stuff! You want this? You can't have it, I got the last one!" and he pointed to his shopping bag. That was unnecessary. I hope his vinyl record collection catches on fire.

Lesson learned, I decided to start lining up early this morning at Dave's Records. The record store was going to open at 11am and I was at the front door by 9am. Even 2 hours before opening, there were 4 people waiting in the cold by the front door! The first person in line said he was there since 7am! The line slowly started to form with most people arriving 1 hour prior to opening. Around 10:30 Dave opened the doors and I stepped into the store with the opening chords of "Baba O'Riley" blasting from the sound system, which pretty much captured the emotions I was feeling. It was pretty organized, all the exclusives were behind the counter and it was on a first-come-first-serve basis. The atmosphere was different than at Permanent last night, the guy ahead of me was willing to give up the John Lennon Singles Bag because he knew that it was at the top of my list. Being fifth in line, I was very lucky and managed to get everything that I wanted without hearing those dreaded words..."Sorry we're sold out."

    Here's what I got from Dave's:

-John Lennon Singles Bag (only 7000 copies worldwide)
-Elvis Presley "That's All Right" 7''
-Elvis Costello - Live At Hollywood High EP 7''
-The Rolling Stones - Plundered My Soul 7'' (only 1000 copies in existence)
-The Doors - People Are Strange/Crystal Ship 7''
-Built to Spill - Water Sleepers/Linus & Lucy (live) 7''
-White Flag 10-inch (limited pressings, don't know exact number)
-The Flaming Lips - Dark Side of the Moon
-Jimi Hendrix - Live @ Clark University ("official" bootleg)
-MGMT - "Siberian Breaks" 12-inch etched single
-Beastie Boys - unlabeled, "super surprise," mystery 12-inch (also 1000 copies in existence). It has one song that samples Daft Punk's "Da Funk" and another song that samples DJ Shadow's "The Number Song."

Also got one of these from Dave's:

Later on I stopped by Reckless Records on Broadway and picked up the Them Crooked Vultures - "Mind Eraser, No Chaser" 10-inch picture disk along with Rodriguez's "Cold Fact" (not a RSD exclusive, but an amazing album nonetheless).

I did not get the Ramones blue/green vinyl, or the Modest Mouse, R.E.M., Sonic Youth, or Apples in Stereo albums because I couldn't afford them. I mean, I love the Magnetic Fields and Joy Division, but I just can't dish out +$200 on a box set right now.

My wallet is hurtin', but hey, it's Record Store Day. The one day of year that music nerds can rejoice and splurge a little. Every year it's exponentially getting crazier and crazier. It's an exciting day for music lovers, but there are also lousy "flippers" that take advantage of the limited releases, buying the albums then re-selling them on eBay at extortionate prices. Sadly, that really takes the spirit out of Record Store Day. I really think that artists and labels should increase the supply of "exclusive" records in order to keep up with the high demand. I didn't see anyone waiting in line overnight this year, but who knows what future Record Store Days will be like?

"It's okay to be a little greedy on Record Store Day, just don't buy these albums and sell them on eBay" --Dave of Dave's Records fame
  • Bands I've Seen Live [Part 4]: The Crazy World of Arthur Brown

    Ago 10 2006, 1h10 por emergingsynergy

Certainly one of the most memorable spectacles at The 1968 Pop Festival was the performance by the band, The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown. This was a two-day festival near Miami, Florida, on May 18 and 19, 1968 [though the second day was almost entirely rained out]; and is easily confused with The 1968 Miami Pop Festival, which was in December of that year.

The Crazy World of Arthur Brown performed their set in the afternoon, and I saw them from the same great seats from which we'd later see Jimi Hendrix's, Frank Zappa's, and Blue Cheer's daytime sets: As I recall it, we were seated on the bare ground of the horse-racing track at Gulfstream Park in Hialeah Florida; and the stage was on the infield of the track. We were quite close to the stage, and the weather and crowd were beautiful.

The Crazy World of Arthur Brown was known to us as they had a current "hit" record out at the time, perhaps-it turned out--their only major hit. The song was called Fire; and it exemplified the band's apparent goal: to sound like its name suggested, "crazy." The opening lyric was a screaming--not singing--Arthur Brown:

I AM THE GOD OF HELLFIRE AND I BRING YOU: . . . FIRE!!!

And when Arthur Brown came out on that stage, with the rest of the band already set up and going, we were convinced he was indeed crazy, and that he had indeed come to bring us "FIRE!" He had the most amazing costume on!!

He was dressed as if he were some kind of Dark Knight, a Darth Vadar meets Monty Python & The Holy Grail run amuck. He stood, it seemed, easily at least seven feet tall. He had a robe that stretched from huge shoulders to the floor. And on his head? His entire face and head were covered, as a knight would do, with a metal-looking faceplate that extended up over his face and into the air like a smoke stack, to have jagged edges at the very top like a built-in crown. [We later surmised that the eye holes in the mask were really far above his eyes, and that he was wearing the mask ON his head to create the illusion of height.]

He stode out on the stage and we were just blown away. Then he screamed the he WAS the god of hellfire, and behold: Out of the top of his head, through the crown, the flames shot!! He had some kind of gas burner in there! It reminded me of the kind of device used in hot-air balloons, and it made that kind of noise: the roar of firing, burning gas, in second-long bursts. There was a lot more noise from the crowd than one gets at simple fireworks!

So the visual surpasses the musical in the memory department: But that song was great, and energetically performed and received.

Now, you may wonder if it wasn't hot in that costume. Not to worry, Arthur Brown quickly got rid of it!

He took off the head gear and the robe early into the set, and before we knew it we could see his . . . diaper!

He had a HUGE diaper on, cartoonish in its size. It was a classic cloth diaper and it was held on, I believe, with huge safety pins. I got my best look at it as he climbed the scaffolding supporting the stage lights, microphone in hand, singing and laughing like a madman!

I think it was within a year or so of that gig when I read of The Crazy World of Arthur Brown, or maybe it was just Arthur Brown alone, being arrested in Ft. Lauderdale for performing on the balcony of their hotel room on the beach, causing a disturbance. I wondered at the time if perhaps he was climbing on the balcony railing, perhaps in a diaper.

He was best at his trademark: laughing like a happy, madman.

    HAHAHHAHAHHAHA!

  • Bands I've Seen Live [Part 5]: The Cream, 1967 at Thee Image, Miami FL

    Ago 27 2006, 16h39 por emergingsynergy

I was in high school, 16 or 17 years old, when I saw Cream. It was in Miami, Florida, at a place called Thee Image; and it was a great venue, and the proof of that is in the great bands that performed there as you will find with a brief search. Thee Image had been a 54 lane bowling alley, and it was converted to a concert hall and used only as a concert hall for years during the peak of the early psychedelic music era.

All of the lanes and bowling aspects had been removed. There were no seats, and audiences generally sat on the floor, with completely open seating. Some of the rooms near the entrance had been converted into specialty areas such as a small shop. There was a room called the "meditation room," which was carpeted and dark, lighted only by florescent "black" light. There was a large, maybe 5 or 6 feet in diameter, circle cut in the carpet and the concrete floor was a circle of psychedelic glowing abstraction which one could stare at as it seemed, I suppose, to pulse in the light. We would sometimes sit in that room during breaks in the shows we attended, and there were many.

Hanging over the main floor was a shallow loft, with the ceiling above that having been removed, where the light crew worked, lying down behind the projectors it seemed.

The light shows at Thee Image were awesome, surely as good as any anywhere! They used the method of mixed colored oils and water between large transparencies, with the light show artist pulsing the colored globules to the beat of the music as the were projected to the wall or screens behind the band. They also projected photographs and words, sometimes in triptych.

For The Cream, we sat on a spot on the floor that was center stage and directly under the light-show artists, perhaps 20 or 25 yards from the front of the stage.

When the band began to play, fresh red roses rained down upon us, dropped from the light-show booth.

This show was not long after the release of the Disraeli Gears album, the band's second album but what seemed the first to most of us. "White Room" and "Sunshine of Your Love" were getting good air play on the progressive, late night radio shows, and occasionally other great cuts as in "Tales of Brave Ulysses" and "SWLABR."

The band was great! I don't have to tell fans that. But I will say that, to me, the most memorable thing was the movement and appearance of drummer Ginger Baker. He was awesome in his physical endurance and speed! Using two bass drums and rolling on them with both feet and legs bouncing, he seemed superhuman; and his hands lifted the sticks high and he rolled about the other drums with them. He seemed very thin, almost gaunt, and sweated profusely. His red hair was fabulous in its glory.

We were taken on a musical trip by the "cream de la cream," the "cream of the crop." Jack Bruce took us away with his bass, and Eric Clapton displayed his outstanding genius. The image I will keep best, is that of Ginger Baker. The song in my mind is "Spoonful."

If you enjoyed this one, you might like some of my other journals. There are a number of journals about new artist, but I have also written about other live shows I saw as a teenager, such as The Jimi Hendrix Experience, The Doors, Blue Cheer, Uriah Heep, and the truly crazy Crazy World of Arthur Brown.

  • Guitar Solos so Far

    Mar 30 2009, 22h04 por TwistedLogic

    1. Jimi Hendrix - Machine Gun

I bet if you haven't heard the song before, you won't notice the solo at all. This happened in my case, back in 2005 the whole thing sounded to me as just a wall of noisy guitar... it's much different these days, there are times when I can imagine with an ease the horror of the battle. The "Band of Gypsys" album contains the ultimate version of the song. Big credit should be given to mister Eddie Kramer for the mixing.

    2. David Gilmour (Pink Floyd) - Comfortably Numb

The most destructive of all Gilmour guitar expressions. There are two solos in the song and the one I mention is the second solo - in the end it leaves you half-dead, not to mention the shivers during the opening. Never heard of a Floyd-fan who has not experienced that.
Loved the thing as it is played in original in The Wall album, soon after realized there's another unique extended and painful one on PULSE.

    3. Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin) - Achilles Last Stand

You were expecting Stairway to Heaven, yes it is definitely amazing, but the solo on Achilles Last Stand is, by my opinion, the most complex guitar solo in his Zeppelin carreer. In the beginning it's sounds like a typical Page solo, but it ends in an absolutely different space giving a new breath to the outro. Bow to the man.

    4. David Gilmour (Pink Floyd) - Time

The space is there thanks to Richard Wright and that opportunity isn't missed by David Gilmour. The solo is a big slap in the face and once or many times in a lifetime - a revelation. If you have the imagination.

    5. Jimi Hendrix (The Jimi Hendrix Experience) - Voodoo Child (Slight Return)

Right there it could have been at number one, the reason it is at fifth place is the enermous popularity of the song. One of those inspired sounds that every guitar player wants to accomplish. Jimi Hendrix did it, a virtuoso who had the talent and freedom of expressing the desired sound. Masterpiece.

    6. Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath) - Wheels of Confusion / The Straightener

Talking about The Straightener, the dual solo, two guitars chasing each other, sounded so beautiful today. A regretful thing, so sad I didn't appreciate this one enough before. At this moment it's my favourite Iommi solo.

    7. Kirk Hammet (Metallica) - The Unforgiven

At first I was used to the metal fast solos, but then came the "misfortune" of tuning on The Unforgiven video, seeing Kirk Hammet make the guitar cry, reaching a higher ground. It was definitely a special moment. Given the fact that not every Metallica solo brings tears to the eyes.

    8. John Frusciante - Unreachable

John Frusciante is keen on the traditional things in rock music and hearing the spacy wah-wah solo really surprised me. I must admit I'm trying to lower my expectations about the future of rock, in a way Unreachable turns out to be the most successful experiment for this decade. One thing is certain - John Frusciante has a lot to offer.

    9. Brian May (Queen) - Bohemian Rhapsody

One of the saddest guitar expressions known to man, Bohemian Rhapsody is special song which centers on a couple of completely different emotions. A tune that turns out to be a standard in music.

    10. Slash (Guns N' Roses) - Sweet Child O'Mine

I remember it was a kick in the ass when I heard it the first time, such a nice tune which turned into a monster solo dance thing, quite an accomplishment for a debut track.

    Are You Experienced?

    FOXY LADY

Foxy, Foxy, you know you are a cute little heart breaker,
Foxy yeah, and you know you are a sweet little love maker.
Foxy, I wanna take you home, yeah, I won't do you no harm, no.
You've got to be all mine, all mine, oh Foxy Lady.
Foxy, Foxy, now-a I see you come down on the scene,
oh Foxy, you make me wanna get up and scream.
Foxy, oh baby listen now, I've made up my mind,
I'm tired of wasting all my precious time.
You've got to be all mine, all mine, Foxy Lady.

I wanna take you home, I won't do you no harm, no.
You've got to be all mine, all mine, Foxy Lady.
Oh Foxy Lady, yeah yeah, you look so good, Foxy oh yeah.
Foxy yeah, give us some, Foxy, Foxy, Foxy.

    MANIC DEPRESSION

    Manic depression's touching my soul,
I know what I want but I just don't know how to go about getting it.
Feeling, sweet feeling drops from my fingers, fingers.
    Manic depression's captured my soul.

Woman so willing the sweet cause in vain,
you make love, you break love, it's all the same when it's, when it's over.
Music, sweet music I wish I could caress, caress, caress.
    Manic depression's a frustrating mess.

Well I think I'll go turn myself off and go on down.
Really ain't no use for me hanging around, oh I gotta see you.
Music sweet music I wish I could caress, caress, caress.
    Manic depression's a frustrating mess.

    RED HOUSE

There’s a red house over yonder, that’s where my baby stays.
There’s a red house over yonder, baby, that’s where my baby stays.
Well I ain’t been home to see my baby in about
a ninety nine and one half days, ‘bout time I see her.
Wait a minute, something’s wrong, the key won’t unlock this door,
wait a minute, something’s wrong, baby, the key won’t unlock the door.
I got a bad, bad feeling that my baby don’t live here no more.

I might as well go back down, go back ‘cross yonder over the hill.
I might as well go back over yonder, way back over yonder ‘cross the hill
    - that’s where I came from -
‘cause if my baby don’t love me no more, oh I know her sister will.

    CAN YOU SEE ME?

Can you see me, blaming you on my knees, wo yeah?
Can you see me, baby? Baby, please don’t leave, yeah.
If you can see me doing that, you can see in the future of a thousand years.

Can you hear me, crying all over town, wo yeah?
Can you hear me, baby, crying ‘cause you put me down?
If you can hear me doing that, you can hear a freight train coming
    from a thousand miles.

Can you hear me singing this song to you? Oh you gotta listen to me, baby.
Can you hear me, baby, singing this song to you?
If you can hear me sing, you better come home like you supposed to do.

Can you hear me, hey, hey?
I don’t believe you can hear me, wo yeah.
    Can you see me baby?
    I don’t believe you can.

    LOVE OR CONFUSION?

Is that the stars in the sky or is it rain falling down?
Will it burn me if I touch the sun, yeah, so big, so round?
Will I be truthful, yeah, in choosing you as the one for me?
Is this love, baby, or is it just a confusion?

Oh my mind is so mixed up, going ‘round and ‘round.
Must there be all these colours without names, without sounds?
My heart burns with feelin’, oh but my mind is so cold and reeling.
Is this love, baby, or is it confusion?

Oh my head is pounding, pounding, goin’ ‘round and ‘round and ‘round
    and ‘round.
Must there always be these colours without names, without sounds?
My heart burns with feelin’, oh but my mind is so cold and reeling.
Is this love, baby, or is it just a confusion?

    I DON’T LIVE TODAY

Will I live tomorrow? Well, I just can’t say.
Will I live tomorrow? Well, I just can’t say,
but I know for sure I don’t live today.

No sun coming through my windows,
feel like I’m living at the bottom of a grave.
No sun coming through my windows,
feel like I’m living at the bottom of a grave.
I wish you’d hurry up and rescue me, (/Jimi almost every time said: "... and execute me"; don't forget it's a kind-a tribute/dedication to the American Indian (among other things) /)
so I can be on my miserable way.

I don’t live today. Will I live tomorrow?
It’s such a shame to waste (spend) your time away like this.
Oh there ain’t no light nowhere.

    MAY THIS BE LOVE

Waterfall, nothing can harm me at all,
my worries seem so very small, with my waterfall.
I can see my rainbow calling me, through the misty breeze of my waterfall.

Some people say day dreaming’s for the lazy minded fools, with nothing
    else to do.
So let them laugh, laugh at me, so just as long as I have you
to see me through, I have nothing to lose, ‘long as I have you.

Waterfall, don’t ever change your ways,
come with me for a million days, oh my waterfall.

    FIRE

    Alright, now listen, baby.
You don’t care for me; I don’t care about that.
Gotta new fool, ha, I like it like that.
I have only one burning desire: let me stand next to your fire,
let me stand next to your fire.

Listen here, baby, and stop acting so crazy.
You say your mum ain’t home, it ain’t my concern.
Just play with me and you won’t get burned.
I have only one itching desire: let me stand next to your fire,
let me stand next to your fire.

Oh move over, Rover, and let Jimi take over.
Yeah, you know what I’m talking about, yeah, get on with it, baby.
    That’s what I’m talking about.
Now dig this, ha, now listen, baby,
you try to gimme your money, you better save it, baby,
save it for your rainy day.
I have only one burning desire: let me stand next to your fire,
let me stand next to your fire.

    THIRD STONE FROM THE SUN

Oh strange beautiful grass of green with your majestic silken scenes,
your mysterious mountains I wish to see closer.
May I land my kinky machine.

Although your world wonders me with your majestic superior cackling hen,
your people I do not understand, so to you I wish to put an end,
and you’ll never hear surf music again.

    REMEMBER

Oh remember the mocking bird, my baby bun.
He used to sing for his supper, baby,
yes, he used to sing for his dinner.
He used to sing so sweet,
but-a since my baby left me he ain’t sang in two long days.

Oh remember the bluebirds and the honey bees,
they used to sing for the sunshine,
yes, they used to sing for the flowers.
They used to sing so sweet,
but-a since my baby left me they ain’t sang in two long days.

Hey pretty baby, come on back to me.
Make everybody happy as can be.
So baby, if you please come home again,
you know I’ll kiss you for my supper,
yeah, you know I’ll kiss you for my dinner, babe.
But if you don’t come back,
you know I’ll have to starve to death,
‘cause I ain’t had a kiss all day now, all day.

Please remember, you got to remember,
you got to remember our love.
Come on back, come on back in my arms.
    I’ll make everything that better.
Come on, baby, hurry up now.
Can you hear me calling you back again now?
Come on, baby, stop jiving around, hurry home, hurry home.

    ARE YOU EXPERIENCED?

If you can just get your mind together, then come on across to me.
We’ll hold hands, and then we’ll watch the sun rise,
from the bottom of the sea.
    But first are you experienced?
Ah, have you ever been experienced?
    Well, I have.

I know, I know you’ll probably scream and cry
that your little world won’t let you go.
But who in your measly little world are you trying to prove that
you’re made out of gold and a-can’t be sold?
    So ‘re, are you experienced?
    Have you ever been experienced?
    Well, I have.
Ah, let me prove it to you.

Trumpets and violins I can hear in the distance,
I think they’re calling our names.
Maybe now you can’t hear them, but you will
if you just take hold of my hand.
    Ah, but are you experienced?
    Have you ever been experienced?
    Not necessarily stoned, but beautiful.

    Axis: Bold As Love

    EXP

Announcer: Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. Welcome to Radio Station EXP. Tonight, we are featuring an interview with a very peculiar looking gentleman who goes by the name of Mr. Paul Corusoe, on the dodgy subject of are there or are there not flying saucers or ….. UFOs. Please Mr. Corusoe, please could you give your regarded opinion on this nonsense about spaceships and even space people.

Mr. Corusoe: Thank you. As you all know, you just can’t believe everything you see and hear, can you. Now, if you will excuse me, I must be on my way.

    Announcer: Bu … but, but … glub … I, I don’t believe it!

Mr. Corusoe: Pffffttt! … Pop! … Bang! … etc.

    UP FROM THE SKIES

I just wanna talk to you, I won’t do you no harm.
I just wanna know about your different lives on this here people farm.
I heard some of you got your families living in cages tall and cold,
and some just stay there and dust away past the age of old.
Is this true? Please let me talk to you.

I just wanna know about the rooms behind your minds,
do I see a vacuum there or am I going blind?
Or is it just a remains from vibrations and echoes long ago?
Things like “Love the world” and “Let your fancy flow”.
Is this true? Please let me talk to you.
    Let me talk to you.

I have lived here before the days of ice,
and of course this is why I am so concerned,
and I come back to find the stars misplaced
and the smell of a world that has burned,
the smell of a world that has burned.

Well, maybe, maybe it’s just a change of climate.
I can dig it, I can dig it, baby, I just wanna see.
So where do I purchase my ticket,
I would just like to have a ringside seat,
I wanna know about the new Mother Earth,
I wanna hear and see everything.
Ah shucks, if my daddy could see me now.

    SPANISH CASTLE MAGIC

It’s very far away, it takes about half a day
to get there, if we travel by my dragonfly.
No, it’s not in Spain, but all the same, you know,
it’s a groovy name and the wind is just right.
Hang on, my darling, hang on if you wanna go.
You know it’s a really groovy place, isn’t it,
and it’s just a little bit of Spanish Castle Magic.

The clouds are really low and they overflow
with cotton candy and battle grounds, red and brown.
But it’s all in your mind, don’t think your time on bad things,
just float your little mind around, look out.
Hang on, my darling, yeah, hang on if you wanna go.
It puts everything else on the shelf,
with just a little bit of Spanish Castle Magic.
It’s all in your mind, baby.

Hang on, my darling, hey hang on, hang on if you wanna go.
It puts everything else on the shelf,
with just a little bit of Spanish Castle Magic.
Hey, a little bit of Spanish Castle Magic,
    it’s all in your mind,
just a little bit of daydream here and there.

    WAIT UNTIL TOMORROW

Well, I’m standing here freezing inside your golden garden.
Got my ladder leaned up against your wall,
tonight’s the night we planned to run away together,
come on, Dolly Mae, there’s no time to stall.
But now you’re telling me that ah …
I think we better wait till tomorrow.
Got to make sure it’s right, so until tomorrow, goodnight.

Oh Dolly Mae, how can you hang me up this way?
On the phone you said you wanted to run off with me today.
Now I’m standing here like some turned-down serenading fool,
hearing strange words stutter from the mixed-up mind of you.
And you keep telling me that ah …
I think we better wait till tomorrow.
Got to make sure it’s right, so until tomorrow, goodnight.

See if we can talk to this girl alone,
oh Dolly Mae, girl you must be insane,
so unsure of yourself leaning from your unsure window pane.
Do I see a silhouette of somebody pointing something from a tree?
Click bang, what a hang, our daddy just shot poor me,
and I hear you say, as I fade away:
We don’t have to wait till tomorrow.
It must not have been right, so forever goodnight.
Do I have to wait? Do I have to wait?
It’s drag on my part, don’t have to wait, don’t have to wait.

    AIN’T NO TELLING

Well, there ain’t no, ain’t no, ain’t no telling baby,
when you will see me again; but I pray it will be tomorrow.
Well, the sunrise, sunrise is burning my eyes, baby,
well, now I must leave now, but I really hope to see you tomorrow.

Well, my house is oh such a sad mile away,
the feeling there always hangs up my day.
Oh Cleopatra she’s driving me insane,
she’s trying to put my body in her brain!
So listen, kiss me goodbye, just to ease the pain.

Ain’t no, ain’t no telling baby,
ain’t no telling, baby, when you’re gonna see me,
but I really hope it will be tomorrow.
You know what I’m talking about, ain’t no telling.
Sorry, but I must leave now.

    LITTLE WING

Well, she’s walking through the clouds,
with a circus mind that’s running wild.
Butterflies and zebras and moonbeams and fairy tales,
that’s all she ever thinks about, riding with the wind.

When I’m sad she comes to me
with a thousand smiles she gives to me free.
It’s alright, she says, it’s alright,
take anything you want from me, anything.
    Fly on little wing.

    IF SIX WAS NINE

    (Yeah, sing a song.)
If the sun refuse to shine, I don’t mind, I don’t mind.
If the mountains fell in the sea, let it be, it ain’t me,
‘cause I got my own world to look through
and I ain’t gonna copy you.

Now if six turned out to be nine, I don’t mind, I don’t mind.
If all the hippies cut off all their hair, I don’t care, I don’t care.
Dig, ‘cause I got my own world to live through
and I ain’t gonna copy you.

White collared conservative flashing down the street,
pointing their plastic finger at me.
They’re hoping soon my kind will drop and die,
but I’m gonna wave my freak flag high, high.
    Wave on, wave on.

Fall mountains, just don’t fall on me.
Go ahead on, Mr. Businessman, you can’t dress like me.
Get on dreaming, strike’s on further.
Nobody will know what I’m talking about.
I got my own life to live, I'm the one that's gonna die, when it's time for me to die.
So let me live my life, do you want too? There are you.
Sing on, brother; play on, drummer.

    YOU GOT ME FLOATING

Well, you got me floating around and round,
always up, you never let me down.
The amazing thing you turn me on naturally,
and I kiss you when I please.
You got me floating round and round, you got me floating never down,
you got me floating naturally, you got me floating, float to please.

You got me floating across and through,
you make me float right on up to you,
there’s only one thing I need to really get me there,
is to hear you laugh without a care.
You got me floating round and round, etc.

You got me floating round and round, etc.

Now your daddy’s cool and your mamma’s no fool,
they both know I’m heads over heels for you,
and when the day melts down into a sleepy red glow,
that’s when my desires start to show.
You got me floating round and round, etc.

    CASTLES MADE OF SAND

Down the street you can hear her scream, “You’re disgrace”,
as she slams the door in his drunken face,
    and now he stands outside
and all the neighbours start to gossip and drool,
he cries, “oh girl, you must be mad,
what happens to the sweet love you and me had?”
Against the door he leans and starts a scene,
and his tears fall and burn the garden green.
And so castles made of sand fall in the sea, eventually.

A little Indian brave who before he was ten
played war-games in the woods with his Indian friends,
    and he built a dream
that when he grew up he would be a fearless warrior Indian chief.
Many moons passed and more the dream grew strong,
until tomorrow he would sing his first war song
and fight his first battle, but something went wrong,
surprise attack killed him in his sleep that night.
And so castles made of sand melts into the sea, eventually.

There was a young girl whose heart was a frown,
because she was crippled for life and she couldn’t speak a sound,
and she wishes and prayed she would stop living,
    so she decide to die.
She drew her wheel chair to the edge of the shore,
and to her legs she smiled, “You won’t hurt me no more”.
But then a sight she’d never seen made her jump and say,
“Look a golden winged ship is passing my way”.
And it really didn’t have to stop,
    it just kept on going.
And so castles made of sand slips into the sea, eventually.

SHE’S SO FINE (SHE’S IN WITH TIME) (Noel Redding)

She walks with a bell clock round her neck,
so the hippies think she’s in with time.
Her hair glistens like robins on a deck,
branches attack me from her neck.
She’s so fine, she’s so very, very fine.

The sun from the clouds seeps into her eyes,
the rain from the trees soaks into her mind.
Morning signs sound just like a lark,
all these signs are always the start.
She’s so fine, she’s so very, very fine.

When I veer, I get so near,
    but so far, far away,
    listen to me today.

We united just beside a leaf,
    The ground was hard underneath.
    She’s so fine.

    ONE RAINY WISH

Gold and rose, the colour of a dream I had, not too long ago,
misty blue and lilac too, but never to grow old.
There you were under a tree of song, sleeping so peacefully,
in your hand a flower played, a-waiting there for me.
I have never laid eyes on you, not before this timeless day,
but you woke and you smiled my name, and you stole my heart away,
you stole my heart away, little girl.

Gold and rose, the colour of a dream I had, not too long ago,
misty blue and lilac too, but never to grow old.

It’s only a dream, but I’d love to tell somebody about this dream,
the sky was filled with a thousand stars, the sun kissed the mountains blue,
And eleven moons played across the rainbows above me and you,
gold and rose, the colour of the velvet walls that surround us.

    LITTLE MISS LOVER

Little miss lover, where have you been in this world for so long?
Well I love a lover that feels like you, would you like to tag along?
Well I really don’t need any help, little girl,
but I believe you could help me out anyway.
Would you believe, baby, I have been looking for a Sue
that feels like you, for some time.

Excuse me while I see if the gypsy in me is right,
    if you don’t mind.
Well, he signals me O.K., so I think it’s safe to say,
    I’m gonna make a play.

    Hey hey, little miss lover,
    hey hey, little miss lover,
there’s so much you and me can discover,
and I think we should start, start right now,
    hey, little miss lover.

    BOLD AS LOVE

Anger he smiles, towering in shiny metallic purple armour.
    Queen Jealousy, Envy, waits behind him;
her fiery green grown sneers at the grassy ground.
Blue are the life-giving waters taking for granted,
    they quietly understand.
Once happy turquoise armies lay opposite, ready,
but wonder why the fight is on.
But they are all bold as love,
yes, they are all bold as love,
yes, they are all bold as love.
    Just ask the axis.

My red is so confident, he flashes trophies of war
    and ribbons of euphoria.
Orange is young, full of daring,
but very unsteady for the first go round.
My yellow in this case is not so mellow,
in fact I’m trying to say it’s frightened like me,
and all these emotions of mine keep holding me from
giving my life to a rainbow like you.
But I’m, yeah, I’m bold as love,
I’m bold as, bold as love,
    I’m bold as love.
    Just ask the axis,
    he knows everything.

    Electric Ladyland

    HAVE YOU EVER BEEN?

Have you ever been, have you ever been to Electric Ladyland?
The magic carpet waits for you, so don’t you be late.
I wanna show you different emotions,
I wanna ride you through the sounds and motions,
electric woman waits for you and me.
So it’s time to take a ride,
you can cast all your hang-ups over the side
while we fly right over the love filled sea,
look, up ahead I see the love land,
    soon you will understand.
    Make love, make love,
    Make love, make love.

I wanna show you angels will spread their wings,
    I wanna show you,
good and evil lay side by side
while electric love penetrates the sky.
    I wanna show you,
    I wanna show you.

    CROSSTOWN TRAFFIC

You jump in front of my car when you know all the time
that ninety miles an hour, girl, is the speed I drive.
You tell me it’s alright, you don’t mind a little pain,
you say you just want me to take you for a drive.
    You’re just like crosstown traffic,
so hard to get through to you, crosstown traffic.
I need to run over you, crosstown traffic,
all you do is slow me down,
I’m trying to get on the other side of town.

I’m not the only soul who’s accused of hit and run,
tiretracks all across your back, aha, I can see you had your fun.
But-a darling, can’t you see my signals turn from green to red,
and with you I can see a traffic jam straight up ahead.
    You’re just like crosstown traffic,
so hard to get through to you, crosstown traffic.
I don’t need to run over you, crosstown traffic,
all you do is slow me down,
and I got better things on the other side of town.
    Crosstown traffic,
    look out, look out, baby.

    VOODOO CHILE

Well, I’m a voodoo chile, Lord, I’m a voodoo chile.

Well, the night I was born, Lord, I swear the moon turned a fire-red.
The night I was born, I swear the moon turned a fire-red.
My poor mother cried out, “Lord, the gypsy was right”,
and I see her fell down right dead.

Well, mountain lions found me there waitin’,
and the set me on an eagle’s back.
Well, mountain lions found me there and set me on an eagle’s wings.
    He took me past the outskirts of infinity;
and when he brought me back, he gave me Venus witch’s ring.
And he said, “Fly on, fly on”,
‘cause I’m a voodoo chile, voodoo chile.

Well, I make love to you and Lord knows you felt no pain.
I said, I make love to you in your sleep and God knows you felt no pain.
‘Cause I’m a million miles away
and at the same time I’m right here inside your picture frame,
    ‘cause I’m a voodoo chile,
Lord knows, I’m a voodoo chile, babe.

My arrows are made of desires from far away as Jupiter sulphur mines.
I say, my arrows are made of desires from far away as Jupiter sulphur mines.
Way down by the methane sea.
I have a humming bird that hums so loud, you think you were losing your mind.

Well, I float in liquid gardens in Arizona’s new red sands.
Well, I float in liquid gardens way down in Arizona’s new red sands.
I taste the honey from a flower name Blue, way down in California,
and New York drowns as we held hands.
    ‘Cause I’m a voodoo chile,
Lord knows, I’m a voodoo chile, babe.

    LITTLE MISS STRANGE (Noel Redding)

No one knows where she comes from; maybe she’s a devil in disguise.
I can tell by looking in her eyes: little miss strange, little miss strange.

Little miss strange came into my parlor, I don’t know just what to ask her.
I don’t remember what we did after, little miss strange, little miss strange.

Little miss strange came out of the darkness,
walked across my head and stood beneath the lights.
I’m talking about the dream I had the other night.
Little miss strange, little miss strange.

    LONG HOT SUMMER NIGHT

Sure it was a long, long, long hot summer night as far as my eyes could see,
but my heart was way down in a cold, cold winter storm.
Oh my darling, where can you be?

There were three sugar walls and two candy cane windows
but Sylvia’s mood melted all those in sight.
Everybody’s on fire but I’m snowing in a cold blizzard.
Where are you on this-uh hot cold summer,
where are you on this-uh hot cold summer,
where are you on this-uh hot cold summer night?

Around about this time the telephone blew its horn across the room,
scared little Annie clean out of her mind
(Roman the candle, he peeps out of his peek-a-boo, hide and seek)
and grabs little Annie from the ceiling just in time.
And the telephone keeps on screaming: yeah yeah yeah yeah.

“Hello”, said my shaky voice, “Well, how you doing?”
I start to stutter, “Uh uh, can’t you tell I’m doing fine?”
It was my baby talking and she’s way down ‘cross the border,
she says, “I’m going to hurry to you,
I’ve been a fool and I’m tired of crying”.

It was a long, long hot summer night as far as my eyes could see
but I can feel the heat coming on as my baby’s getting closer.
I’m so glad that my baby’s coming to rescue me,
so glad that my baby’s coming to rescue me.

    COME ON

People talking but they just don’t know
what’s in my heart and why I love you so.
I love you, baby, like a miner loves gold,
come on sugar, let the good times roll.

So many people live and make believe
that keep a lot of dough it up their sleeve,
but my lover baby isn’t that kind of fool,
come on baby, let the good times roll.

Oh love is nice if it’s understood,
it’s even nicer when you’re feeling good.
You got me flipping like a flag on a boat,
come on sugar, let the good times roll.

    GYPSY EYES

Well, I realize that I’ve been hypnotized,
I love you Gypsy eyes, I love you Gypsy eyes.

Way up in my tree I’m sitting by my fire,
wondering where in this world might you be,
and knowing all the time you still are roaming the country side.
Do you still think about me? Oh my gypsy eyes.

Well, I walk right on up to your rebel roadside,
the one that rambles on for a million miles.
Well, I walk down this road, searching for your love and uh my soul too,
and when I find you, I ain’t gonna let you go.

I remember the first time I saw you,
The tears in your eyes look like they was trying to say,
“Oh little boy, you know I could love you
but first I must make my getaway,
two strange men fighting to the death over me today,
I’ll try to meet you by the old highway”.

I realize that I’ve been hypnotized,
I love you Gypsy eyes, I love you Gypsy eyes.

I’ve been searching so long, my feet they painfully leave the battle,
down against the road my weary knees take their place.
Off to the side I fall, but I hear a sweet call.
My Gypsy eyes has found me and I’ve been saved,
    Lord, I’ve been saved.
That’s why I love you, Lord knows I love you.

    BURNING OF THE MIDNIGHT LAMP

The morning is dead and the day is too.
There’s nothing left here to greet me but the velvet moon.
All my loneliness I have felt today,
it’s a little more than enough to make a man throw himself away,
and I continue to burn the midnight lamp alone.

Now the smiling portrait of you is still hanging on my frowning wall,
it really doesn’t, it really doesn’t bother me at all,
it’s just the ever falling dust that makes it so hard for me to see,
that forgotten earring laying on the floor facing coldly towards the door,
and I continue to burn the midnight lamp alone.

So here I sit and face the same old fireplace,
keep running through the same old thoughts of you going through my mind,
and soon enough time will tell about the purpose in the wishing well.
And someone will write a spell for me, someone will tell my spell,
and I continue to burn the same old lamp alone.

    RAINY DAY, DREAM AWAY

Rainy day, dream away, let the sun take a holiday,
flowers bathe and see the children play, lay back and groove on a rainy day.
Well, I can see a bunch of wet preachers; look at them on the run!
The carnival traffic noise, it sinks to a splashy hum,
even the ducks can groove, rain battering in the parkside pool,
and I’m leaning on my window sill, digging everything.

Rainy day, rain all day, ain’t no use in getting up tight.
Just let it groove its own way, let it drain your worries away.
Lay back and groove on a rainy day, lay back and dream on a rainy day.

1983…. (A MERMAN I SHOULD TURN TO BE)

    Hooray, I awake from yesterday,
alive but the war is here to stay.
So my love Catherina and me
decide to take our last walk through the noise to the sea,
not to die but to be re-born
away from lands so battered and torn, forever.

Oh say, can you see it’s really such a mess?
Every inch of earth is a fighting nest,
giant pencil and lipstick tube shaped things,
continue to rain and cause screaming pain,
and the artic stains from silver blue to bloody red
as our feet find the sands and the sea is straight ahead.

Well, it’s too bad that our friends can’t be with us today,
    well, it’s too bad.
The machine that we built would never save us, that’s what they say,
(that’s why they not have come up with us today).
    They also said, “It’s impossible
for a man to live and breathe under water forever”.
    That was their main complaint,
and they also threw this in my face, they said,
“Anyway, you know good and well it would be beyond the will of God
and the grace of the king”.

So my darling and I make love in the sand
to salute the last moment ever on dry land.
Our machine, it has done its work, played its part well,
without a scratch on our bodies and we bid it farewell.
Starfish and giant foams greet us with a smile,
before our heads go under we take a last look at the killing noise
    of the out of style.

MOON, TURN THE TIDES… GENTLY, GENTLY AWAY

So down and down and down and down and down and down we go.
Hurry, my darling, we mustn’t be late for the show.
Neptune champion games to an aqua world is so very dear.
“Right this way”, smiles a mermaid, I can hear Atlantis full of cheer,
Atlantis full of cheer, I can hear Atlantis full of cheer.

    STILL RAINING, STILL DREAMING

Rainy day, rain all day, ain’t no use in getting up tight.
Just let it groove its own way, let it drain your worries away.

Lay back and groove on a rainy day, lay back and dream on a rainy day.

    HOUSE BURNING DOWN

    Hey, hey, hey, hey.
Look at the sky turn a hell fire red,
somebody’s house is burning down, down, down, down, down, down, down.

Well, I asked my friend, “Where is that black smoke coming from?”
He just coughed and changed the subject and said, “Uh, it might snow some”.
So I left him sipping his tea, and I jumped in my chariot
and rode off to see just why and who it could be this time.
Sisters and brothers, daddies, mothers standing ‘round crying,
when I reached the scene the flames were making a ghostly whine.
So I stood on my horse’s back, and I screamed without a crack,
I say, “Oh baby, why did you burn your brother’s house down?”
    Hey, hey, hey, hey.
Look at the sky turn a hell fire red, Lord,
somebody’s house is burning down, down, down, down.

Well, someone stepped from the crowd, he was nineteen miles high.
He shouts, “We’re tired and disgusted, so we paint red through the sky”.
I say, “The truth is straight ahead, so don’t burn yourself instead.
Trying to learn instead of burn, hear what I say”.
So I finally rode away, but I’ll never forget that day.
    ‘Cause when I reached the valley, I looked ‘way down ‘cross the way;
a giant boat from space landed with eerie grace,
and came and taking all the dead away.
    Hey, hey, hey, hey.
Look at the sky turn a hell fire red, Lord,
somebody’s house is burning down, down, down, down.

ALL ALONG THE WATCHTOWER (Bob Dylan)

“There must be some kind-a way out of here”, said the joker to the thief,
“There’s too much confusion, I can’t get no relief.
Businessmen they drink my wine, plowmen dig my earth.
None will level on the line, nobody of it is worth, hey”.

“No reason to get excited”, the thief he kindly spoke,
“There are many here among us who feel that life is but a joke.
But you and I, we’ve been through that, and this is not our fate.
So let us not talk falsely now, the hour is getting late, hey”.

All along the watchtower princess kept the view,
while all the women came and went, barefoot servants too.
Outside in the cold distance a wildcat did growl,
two riders were approaching and the wind began to howl, hey.
    All along the watchtower.

    VOODOO CHILD (SLIGHT RETURN)

Well, I stand up next to a mountain
and I chop it down with the edge of my hand,
well, I stand up next to a mountain
and I chop it down with the edge of my hand.
Well, I pick up all the pieces and make an island
might even raise just a little sand.
    ‘Cause I’m a voodoo child,
Lord knows, I’m a voodoo child, baby.

I didn’t mean to take up all your sweet time,
I’ll give it right back to you one of these days.
I said, I didn’t mean to take up all your sweet time,
I’ll give it right back one of these days.
And if I don’t meet you no more in this world
then I’ll meet you in the next one,
so don’t be late, don’t be late.
    ‘Cause I’m a voodoo child,
Lord knows, I’m a voodoo child, baby.

    Band Of Gypsys

    WHO KNOWS?

They don’t know (they don’t know) like I know (like I know).
    Do you know ? (they don’t know) I don’t know (I don’t know)
what my baby puttin’ down, what my baby puttin’ down.
I just came back, well, I didn’t found her,
I just came back in town, looking for my Sally.
Have you seen her (I’ve been free, yeah), have you seen her?
Talking about my baby, talking about my baby.

Just came in, just came in, babe, just came in.
Spreading magic, honey, all in my bed,
she got chains attached to my head.
Talking about, talking about, talking about my baby,
    I don’t know about.

They don’t know what I now,
they don’t know like I know.
All the time I’ve been hanging around,
all the time I’ve been hanging around,
she didn’t know, she didn’t care,
she didn’t know, she didn’t care,
and she go walking down the street, singing.

    They don’t know, nobody knows,
they don’t know, just don’t know.

    MACHINE GUN

Machine gun, tearing my body all apart,
machine gun, tearing, tearing my body all apart.
Evil man make kill me you, evil man make you kill me,
evil man make me kill you, even though we’re only friends of ways apart.

Well, I pick up my axe and fight like a farmer (you know what I mean),
hey, and your brother seem not guilty now.
Hey, I pick up my axe and fight like a farmer now,
yeah, but you still blast me down to the ground.

The same way you shoot me now, baby,
you’ve been blowing just the same,
three times a pay, and you’re also to blame.
    Hey, machine gun.

I ain’t afraid of the chopper now, I ain’t afraid no more.
After a while, you all, your cheap talk don’t even cause me pain.
So let your bullets fly like rain.
But I know all the time you’re wrong, baby,
and you’ve been going just the same.
Yeah, machine gun, tearing my body apart.

    Don’t you shoot him down, he’s about to leave here;
don’t you shoot him down, he’s got to stay here.
He ain’t going nowhere, he’s been shot down to the ground.
All he can say back, “No, no”.

Yeah, that’s what we don’t want to hear anymore. Alright?
No bullets, no guns, no bombs.

    THEM CHANGES

Well, my mind is going through them changes,
I feel just like committin’ a crime.
Everytime you see me going somewhere,
I feel I’ve gone right out of my mind, yeah.
Oh my baby, she left me the other day,
and we were having so much fun, yeah yeah.
Oh my baby, she stepped out on me,
and that’s the reason why she had to run.
It’s alright, yeah yeah, it’s alright,
    Lord, I say, it’s alright.

Well, my mind is going through them changes,
I think I’m going out of my mind.
Everytime you’ll see me going somewhere,
I think I could commit a crime, yeah.
She had me running, she had me crying,
she had me running and-a, and-a, and-a crying,
she had me running, she had me crying,
    she had me running.
Hey that’s alright, yeah yeah, it’s alright.

    POWER OF SOUL

Shoot down some of those alleys, Buddy, (/also possible: … some of those airplanes, …/)
special ones set fire to Noel. (/also possible: special ones set to who fly low./)
Shoot down some of those alleys, Buddy,
special if you wanna set fire to Noel.
Come on back and jump in, my friend,
come on and jump with me.
We’ve all been a-grooving nighttime, baby,
    dollar streams raised all reality.
With the power of soul everything is possible,
with the power of soul everything is possible.

Find so much we want today,
    preciable instants to and far.
It’s so groovy to float around sometimes,
even a jelly-fish** will tell you that.
I said, floatation is groovy and easy,
even a jelly-fish will relate to that.
Yeah, but all the jelly-fish been floating so long and so slack,
    Lord, ain’t don’t got a bone in his jelly-back.
Floating every day and every night, riding high,
then there’s a rest, sometimes the wind ain’t right.
With the power of soul anything is possible,
with the power of soul anything is possible.
With the power of soul anything that you wanna do,
with the power of soul anything that you wanna do.

    **jelly-fish = een kwal

    MESSAGE OF LOVE

Well, we chuck up lot of speed, of a reborn man.
We got a lot of love to give, from the mirrors of my hair.
I send a message of love, don’t you run away.
Forget your heart, baby, come on along with me today.
Well, I am what I am, thank God.
Some people just don’t understand, well, help them God.
&#-->Find yourself first, and then your tool,<--&#
    &#-->find yourself first, don’t you be a (/no) fool.<--&#

Here comes a woman, wrapped up in chain.
Listen, what’s that prove, baby, your life is pain.
If you wanna be free, come on roll with me.
Oh that’s alright, you’ll never understand, (/Woodstock: never mind that pig, he’ll …/)
    I said, find yourself first and then you’re taller;
&#-->work hard in your mind, and with it come alive
and then you prove to the men you’re strong as hill.
I said, my eyes are God, you both tune to Him. (/diverse concerten: ‘cause in the eyes of God, we’re all children to Him/ /Woodstock: ‘cause in the eyes of God, you’re both children to Him/)

Everybody come alive, everybody love a life.
Everybody hear my message, everybody hear my message.<--&#

    WE GOTTA LIVE TOGETHER

Oh Miles’ dog, it’s wagging its tail.
Nobody loves him, he’s sent up to jail.
He’s looking for a home sweet home, home sweet home, home sweet home.

Gonna be love beside you all, gonna have love inside you all.
Home sweet home, home sweet home, home sweet home.
&#-->We gotta live together, we gotta live together,
    we gotta live together.<--&#

    The Cry of Love

    FREEDOM

You got my pride hanging out of my bed.
You messing with my life so I brought my lead,
    even messing with my children.
And you screaming at my wife, baby,
get off of my back if you wanna get out of here alive.
Freedom, that’s what I want now,
freedom, that’s what I need now,
    freedom to live,
    freedom, so I can give.

You got my heart speaking ledge and water,
you got my soul screaming and hollering.
You know you hooked my girlfriend, you know the drugstore man.
Well, I don’t need it now, I’m just trying to slap it out of her hand.
    Freedom, so I can live,
    freedom, so I can give,
freedom yeah, freedom that’s what I need.

You don’t have to say that you love me,
if you don’t mean it, you better believe it.
If you need me or just wanna bleed me,
better stick your daggers in someone else,
so I can leave, set me free.

Write (/Ride) on, straight ahead, stay up there.
    Straight ahead, freedom,
so I can live in freedom.
To my children I can give it, freedom.
    Straight ahead, freedom.

    DRIFTING

Drifting on a sea of forgotten teardrops,
on a lifeboat sailing for your love,
    sailing home.

Drifting on a sea of old heartbreaks,
on a lifeboat sailing for your love,
    sailing home.

    EZY RIDER

There goes ezy, ezy rider, riding down the highway of desire.
He says the free wind takes him higher,
trying to find his heaven above, but he’s dying to be loved,
    dying to be loved.
He’s gonna be living so madly; today is forever, so he claims.
He’s talking about dying, it’s so tragic, baby.
But don’t worry about today, we got freedom coming our way,
    freedom coming our way.

How long do you think he’s gonna last, can I forecast?
See all the lovers say, “Do what you please”.
Gotta get the brothers together and the right to be free.
In a cloud of angel dust I think I see a freak.
Hey look, motorcycle mama, you gonna marry me.
Gonna be stoned, still, crazy, love,
    come in, stoned, crazy.

There goes ezy, ezy rider, riding down the highway of desire.
He says the free wind takes him higher,
searching for his heaven above, but he’s dying to be loved,
    dying to be loved.
There goes ezy, ezy rider, ezy rider.

    NIGHT BIRD FLYING

She’s just a night bird flying through the night, fly on.
She’s just a night bird making a midnight, midnight flight,
sail on, sail on, yeah yeah.
Well, she’s flying down to me
but until tomorrow got to set her free, set her free.

So all we got, baby, is one precious night,
all we got is one precious night.
Throw off your blues and shoes and things and lay it down under the bed.
Just wrap me up in your beautiful wings, better hear what I say, okay.
Please take me through your dreams inside your world I want to be.
Until tomorrow no tears will be shed, hold on till the sun gets out of bed,
    hold on, hold on, baby.
    Fly on.
Sail on, sail on, sail on.
    Sail on, ride on.

    MY FRIEND

You all pass me that bottle, and I’ll sing you a real song:

Well, I’m looking through Harlem, my stomach squeals just a little more.
A stagecoach full of feathers and footprints pulls up to my soapbox door.
Now a lady with a pearl-handled necktie tied to the driver’s fence
breathes in my face bourbon and coke possessed words,
“Haven’t I seen you somewhere in hell, or was it just an accident?”
You know how I felt then; it’s so …..

Before I could ask, “Was it the East or West side?”
my feet they howled in pain,
the wheels of a band wagon cut very deep,
but not as deep in my mind as the rain.
And as they pulled me away, I could see her words,
staggering, falling on my muddy tent.
Well, I picked them up, brushed them off to see what they said
    and you wouldn’t believe,
“Come around to my room with the tooth in the middle
and bring along a bottle and a president”.
And a-sometimes it’s not so easy, baby, specially when your only friend
talks, sees, looks and feels like you and you do just the same as him.
Gets very lonely up this room, baby, yeah.

    Got so more to say.
    Well, I’m riding through L.A.
on a bicycle built for fools.
And I seen one of my old buddies,
he say, “You don’t look the way you used to do”.
I say, “Well, some people look like a coinbox”,
he say, “Look like you ain’t got no coins to spare”.
And I lay back and I thought to myself and I said this.
I just picked up my pride from beneath the pay phone,
and combed his breath right out of my hair.
And sometimes it’s not so easy, specially when your only friend
talks, sees, looks and feels like you and you do just the same as him.

I just got out of a Scandinavian jail,
and I’m on my way straight home to you.
But I feel so dizzy I take a quick look in the mirror,
to make sure my friend’s here with me too.
And you know good well I don’t drink coffee,
so you fill my cup full of sand.
And a frozen TV is on the bar-room,
sharing its sticks around the broken edge.
And my coat that you let your dog lay by the fire on,
and your cat he attaches me from his pill-box ledge,
and I thought you were my friend too.
Man, my shadow comes around before you.
I find out that it’s not so easy, specially when your only friend
talks, looks, sees and feels like you and you do the same just like him.
    But so long here, yeah.

    STRAIGHT AHEAD

Hello, my friend, so happy to see you again.
I’m so alone, all by myself, I just couldn’t make it.

Have you heard, baby, what the wind’s blowing round?
Have you heard, baby, a whole lot of people’s coming right on down?
Communication, yeah, is coming on strong.
I don’t give a damn, baby, if your hair is short or long.
I said, get out of your grave, go, everybody’s dancing in the street.
Hey, do what you know and don’t be slow.
You gotta practice what you preach, yeah,
‘cause it’s time for you and me, come to face reality,
forget about the past, baby, things ain’t what they used to be.
Keep on straight ahead, keep on straight ahead,
straight ahead, baby, straight ahead, baby.

We got to stand side by side, we got to stand together and organize.
They say power to the people, that’s what they’re screaming.
Freedom of the soul, pass it on, pass it on, to the young and old.
You got to tell the children the truth, they don’t need a whole lot of lies,
because one of these days, baby, they’ll be running things.
So when you give them love, you better give it right.
Woman and child, man and wife, the best love to have is the love of life.
Pass it on, baby, pushing ahead, baby, straight ahead, baby.

Hello, my friend, it’s so good to see you again.
Been all, been all by myself, I don’t think I can make it alone.
Lord, gotta keep pushing ahead, Lord, been staying on my own,
    gotta keep pushing ahead.

    ASTRO MAN

A little boy inside a dream just the other day,
his mind fell out of his face and the wind blew it away.
A hand came out of heaven and pinned a badge on his chest,
and said, get out there, man, and do your best.

They called him Astro Man, and he’s flying higher than
that old faggot superman ever could.
How they call him Cosmic Nut and he’s twice as fast as Donald Duck,
and he’ll try his best to screw you up and mess up your mind.

Astro Man, flying ‘cross the sky,
two times higher than that old faggot superman,
than he ever could, ever could.

There he goes, where he stops no one knows.
He’s trying, trying to blow out the rest of your mind,
he’s gonna blow out the rest of your mind.
Talking about a little bit of peace of mind,
Astro Man is leaving a peace on earth,
packing up in one shovel all heartbreaks
and make it fly out in pieces.
Yeah, blow out the rest of your mind,
Astro Man will blow out the rest of your mind,
    peace on earth.
Yeah, blow out the rest of your mind.

    ANGEL

Angel came down from heaven yesterday,
she stayed with me just long enough to rescue me,
and she told me a story yesterday
about the sweet love between the moon and the deep blue sea.
And then she spread her wings high over me,
she said she’s gonna come back tomorrow.
And I said, “Fly on, my sweet angel, fly on through the sky,
fly on, my sweet angel, tomorrow I’m gonna be by your side”.

Sure enough this woman came home to me,
silver wings silhouetted against a child’s sunrise.
And my angel she said unto me, “Today is the day for you to rise.
Take my hand, you’re gonna be my man, you’re gonna rise”.
And then she took me high over yonder, Lord.
And I said, “Fly on, my sweet angel, fly on through the sky,
fly on, my sweet angel, forever I will be by your side”.

    IN FROM THE STORM

Well, I just came back today, I just came back from the storm.
I said, I just came back, baby, I just came back from the storm,
    yeah, in from the storm.
Well, I did not know it then, but I was suffering,
suffering for my love to keep me warm.
It was so cold and lonely, yeah,
the wind was crying and the rain was tearing me up.
It was so cold and lonely, the crying blue rain was tearing me up.
I wanna thank you, my sweet darling,
for digging in the mud and picking me up.
    Thank you, baby.

It was a crying blue rain that burned in my eyes,
the wind and the lightening struck by surprise,
it was you, my love, who brought me in,
I love you so much, I’ll never stray from you again.
I just came back today, just came back again,
my baby, I’m on my way.

    BELLY BUTTON WINDOW

Well, I’m up here in this womb, I’m looking all around.
Well, I’m looking out my belly button window, and I see a whole lot of frowns,
and I’m wondering if they don’t want me around.

What seems to be the fuss out there, just what seems to be the hang.
‘Cause you know if they just don’t want me this time around,
yeah, I’ll be glad to go back to Spirit Land.

And even take along the rest, before I’m coming down the chute again.
Man, I sure remember the last time, baby,
they were still hawking about me then.
So if you don’t want me now, make up your mind, where or when,
if you don’t want me now, give or take, you only got 200 days,
‘cause I ain’t coming down this way too much more again.

You know they got pills for ills, and thrills and even spills,
but I think you’re just a little too late.
So I’m coming down into this world, daddy, regardless of love and hate.
I’m gonna sit up in your bed, mama, and just a-grin right in your face.
And then I’m gonna eat up all your chocolates,
and say I hope I’m not too late.
So if there’s any questions, make up your mind,
‘cause you would give or take, questions in your mind,
give or take, you only got 200 days.

Here in this womb, looking all around,
she’s dogging him and I’m looking out my belly button window,
and ask where I see that whole lot of frowns,
and I’m wondering if they want me around.

    Rainbow Bridge

    DOLLY DAGGER

    Here comes Dolly Dagger,
her love’s so heavy, she’s gonna make you stagger.
Dolly Dagger, she drinks her blood from a jagged edge.

Been riding broomsticks since she was fifteen,
blowin’ out all the other witches on the scene.
She got a bull whip just as long as your life,
her tongue can even scratch the soul out of the devil’s wife.
Well, I seen her in action at the players choice,
turning all the love men into doughnut boys,
hey, red hot Momma, you better step aside,
this chick’s gonna turn you to a block of ice. Look out!
    Here comes Dolly Dagger,
her love’s so strong, it’s gonna make you stagger.
Dolly Dagger, she drinks her blood from a jagged edge.
    Drink up, baby.

Look at burned-out superman tryin’ to shoot his dust on the sun,
captain Coconut is dead on the run,
the words of love, do they ever touch Dolly Brown,
better get some highway and clear out of town.
    Here comes Dolly Dagger,
her love’s so heavy, it’s gonna make you stagger.
She ain’t satisfied till she gets what she’s after,
she drinks her blood from a jagged edge.
You better watch out, baby, here comes you master.
    Alright.

    EARTH BLUES

Well, I see hands and distant faces,
reachin’ upward, not quite touching the promised land.
Well, I tasted a whole lot of precious years wasted,
saying, Lord, please give us a helping hand.
There’s got to be some changes,
    a whole lot of re-arranges.
You better hope love is the answer,
You better hope it comes before the summer.

Well, everyone can hear the sound of Freedom speeding high,
sirens flashing with earth and rockets stoning.
You better love me like this gonna be the last time
and tell the child to bury daddy’s old clothes.
Yeah, they’re talking about getting together,
    together for love or blood?
You better hope love is the answer,
you better hope it comes before the summer.
    Everybody, every sister, every mother,
to feel the light, it’s shining bright, baby,
    everybody’s gotta live together.
    Right on, baby…..
feel those surf blues coming at you!

Don’t let your imagination take you by surprise,
a queen I’ll be one day, visualize,
my head in the cloud, my feet on the pavement,
don’t get too stoned, please remember you’re a man.
There’s got to be some changes,
live it together, gonna be a lot of re-arranges.
You better be ready, Lord, Lord,
let’s hope love comes before the summer.
    Everybody, every sister, every mother,
to feel the light, it’s shining bright, baby,
    everybody’s gotta live together.

    ROOM FULL OF MIRRORS

Are you thrilled with a room full of mirrors, (/concerten en zover ik eiglk alleen ken: I used to live in a room full of mirrors/)
all I could see was me,
then I take my spirit and I smash my mirrors,
and now the whole world is here for me to see,
I say, the whole world is here for me to see,
now I’m searchin’ for my love to be.

A broken glass was solvin’ my brain,
cut and screamin’, crowdin’ in my head.
A broken glass was loud in my brain,
it used to fall on my dreams and cut me in my bed,
    it used to fall on my dreams and cut me in my bed;
I say, makin’ love was strange in my bed.

Love comes shine over the mountains,
love comes shine over the sea,
love will shine on my baby,
then I know it’s access for me,
Lord, I know who’ll be for me
in the meantime which is a groovy time just to be.

    LOOK OVER YONDER

Look over yonder, here come the blues,
pretending they’re good guys powered by fools,
I can see them comin’ wearin’ a blue armored coat,
you’re standin’ there with your violence hittin’ wrong notes.

Look over yonder, he’s comin’ my way,
when he’s around I never have a happy day.
You even busted my guitar strings.
    Look over yonder.

Look over yonder, well, he’s talkin’ to my babe,
they found my peace pipe on her,
    now they’re dragging her away.
    Lord knows they don’t need
a devil like him beatin’ us around.
Well, he’s knockin’ on my door,
now my house is tumbling down.

Don’t you come no closer, the path is gettin’ colder.
Get away from my door, baby,
unless you want to start another war.
    Look over yonder,
    hey look over yonder.

    HEAR MY TRAIN A-COMIN’

Well, I hear my train a-comin’,
hear my train a-, hear my train a-comin’.

I wait around the train station, wait for that train
to take me away, Lord, take me the hell out away from here,
take me from this lonesome town.
Too bad you don’t love me no more, babe,
too bad your people cool me down, oh down.

Get rid of me, get rid of me and my soul.
Oh, lots of brothers get in there,
get rid of me and my heart,
tears burnin’ me down in my soul.
Too bad you don’t love me no more, baby,
too bad your people, Lord, can they be cruel.
Hear my train a-comin’, hear my train a-comin’,
I hear freedom comin’, hear my train a-comin’.

I gotta leave this town, Lord, I gotta leave this town,
gotta go on the road right now, baby,
Lord, I gotta be a fool to try, baby.
Go on your world to become a magic voyage,
come back and buy this town,
come back and buy this town,
and give it all, give it all, give it all to you.
Yeah baby, you make love to me one more time
and Lord, I gotta give it, give it all to you,
all my love is for you, baby.
I hear my train a-comin’, hear my train a-comin’,
one of these days I gotta be free.
    Hear my train a-comin’,
    hear my train a-comin’.

    HEY BABY (NEW RISING SUN)

Hey baby, where do you comin’ from?
She looked at me and smiled and looked at the space,
and said, I’m comin’ from the land of the New Rising Sun.
Then I said, Hey baby, where you tryin’ to go to?
Then she said, I’m gonna spread, spread around peace of mind
and a whole lot of love to you and you.
Could I, I’d like to come along.
Yes, I’d love to come along.
Would you like to come along, should I stay?
    Just tag along right now.

Hey baby, can I step into your world awhile?
    Yes, you can, she said, come on back with me for awhile;
we’re gonna go across the Jupiter, the Sun,
    and see all your people one by one;
we gotta help your people out right now,
that’s why I’m doing it all around.
Yeah yeah, may I come along?
    Yeah yeah, come along?
Yeah yeah, come along, yeah yeah?
    Please take me.

    SMASH HITS

    PURPLE HAZE

Purple haze all in my brain,
lately things just don’t seem the same,
actin’ funny, but I don’t know why,
excuse me while I kiss the sky.

    Purple haze all around,
don’t know if I’m coming up or down.
Am I happy or in misery?
Whatever it is, that girl put a spell on me!

Yeah, purple haze all in my eyes,
don’t know if it’s day or night.
You’ve got me blowing, blowin’ my mind.
Is it tomorrow or just the end of time?

    FIRE

    THE WIND CRIES MARY

After all the jacks are in their boxes,
and the clowns have all gone to bed,
you can hear happiness staggering on down the street,
    footprints dressed in red.
    And the wind whispers Mary.

    A broom is drearily sweeping
up the broken pieces of yesterday’s life.
    Somewhere a Queen is weeping,
somewhere a King has no wife.
And the wind it cries Mary.

The traffic lights they turn blue tomorrow
    and shine their emptiness down on my bed;
    the tiny island sags downstream
‘cause the life that they lived is dead.
    And the wind screams Mary.

    Will the wind ever remember
the names it has blown in the past?
And with this crutch, its old age and its wisdom
it whispers, “No, this will be the last”.
    And the wind cries Mary.

    CAN YOU SEE ME?

    51ST ANNIVERSARY

A fifty years they’ve been married,
and they can’t wait for the fifty first to roll around,
    yeah, roll around.
A thirty years they’ve been married,
and now they’re old and happy and they settle down,
    settle down, yeah.
    Twenty years they’ve been married,
    and they did everything that, that could be done;
    you know that happened.
And then you came along and talkin’ about…..
so you, you say you wanna be married.
Oh I’m gonna change your mind, oh.

That was the good side, baby, here comes the bad side:
    Ten years they’ve been married,
and hundred kids run around hungry
    ‘cause their mother’s a louse.
Daddy’s down at the whiskey house.
    That ain’t all.
For three years they’ve been married,
they don’t get along so good,
    they’re tired of each other,
    you know how that goes.
    Huh! Same old thing.
    So now you’re seventeen,
    running around, hanging out, having your fun;
life for you has just begun, baby.
    And then you come saying…..
so you, you say you wanna be married.
    Oh baby, trying to put me on a chain;
    ain’t that some shame?
You must be losing your … sshh-hm … sweet little mind.
    I ain’t ready yet, baby, I ain’t ready.
I’m gonna change your mind, oh.
    I ain’t ready, I ain’t ready now.

    HEY JOE (Billy Roberts)

“Hey Joe, where you going with that gun in your hand?”
“Hey Joe”, I said, “Where you going with that gun in your hand? “
“I’m going down to shoot my old lady,
you know I caught her messin’ around with another man, yeah.
I’m going down to shoot my old lady,
you know I caught her messin’ around with another man”.
“Hey Joe, I heard you shot your woman down,
    you shot her down now.
Hey Joe, I heard you shot your old lady down,
you shot her down to the ground, yeah”.
“Yes I did, I shot her, you know I caught her messin’ around,
    messin’ around town;
yes I did, I shot her, you know I caught her messin’ around town,
and I gave her the gun, I shot her”.

Alright, shoot her one more time again.
    Yeah, oh dig it now,
    Alright.

“Hey Joe”, I said, “Where’re you gonna run to now,
    where you gonna run to?”
“Hey Joe”, I said, “Where you gonna run to now,
    where you gonna go?”
“Well, dig it, I’m gonna way down south,
way down to Mexico way, alright.
I’m gonna way down south, way down where I can be free,
there ain’t no one gonna find me,
there ain’t no hangman gonna, he ain’t gonna put a rope around me,
you better believe it right now, I gotta go now”.
“Hey Joe, you’d better run on now”.
    “Goodbye everybody”.

    STONE FREE

Every day in the week I am in a pitiful city.
If I stay too long the people try to pull me down.
They talk about me like a doll [edit: dog], talk about the clothes I wear,
but they don’t realize they’re the ones who’s square.
Hey that’s why you can’t hold me down,
I don’t wanna be down, I gotta move on, oh.
I said, stone free, to do what I please,
stone free to ride the breeze,
    stone free, I can’t stay,
I gotta gotta gotta get away, right now, yeah.
    Alright.

    Listen to this, baby.
A woman here, a woman there try to keep me in a plastic cage,
but they don’t realize it’s so easy to unbreak.
Oh but sometimes I can, huh, I can feel my heart kinda running hot,
that’s when I gotta move, before I get caught.
Hey that’s why, listen to me, baby, you can’t hold me down,
I don’t wanna be tight down, I gotta be free, oh.
I said, stone free, to do what I please,
Stone free, to ride the breeze, stone free, I can’t stay,
I gotta gotta gotta get away, yeah oh.
    Turn me loose, baby.

Oh yeah, I said, stone free, to ride the breeze,
stone free, to do what I please,
stone free, but I can’t stay,
stone free, I gotta gotta gotta get away,
stone free, I go, baby, right now, don’t try to hold me back.
Stone free, I’m gonna go down the highway, yeah,
    stone free, gonna there now,
    bye bye, baby, oh.

    It’s happening, it’s happening, baby.
Yeah, I hope you’re enjoying your ride; I am!

    MANIC DEPRESSION

    HIGHWAY CHILE

Yeah, his guitar is strung across his back,
his dusty boots is his Cadillac.
A-flamin’ here, just a-blowin’ in the wind,
ain’t seen a bed, and so long misdecent.
He left home when he was seventeen,
the rest of the world he is gonna seen.
And everybody they know his boss,
a rolling stone, to gather its own moss.
Have you probably called him a tramp?
But it goes a little deeper than that: he is a highway chile.
    Yeah.

Now some people say he had a girl back home,
who messed around and did him pretty wrong.
They tell me it kinda hurt him bad,
gotta make him feel pretty sad.
I couldn’t say if it was true in time,
anyway, he left the world behind.
Everybody knows the same old story,
and love and war can loose in glory.
Now you probably call him a tramp.
I know it goes a little deeper than that: he is a highway chile.
    Walk on, brother, yeah.

His old guitar is strung across his back,
his dusty boots is his Cadillac.
A-flamin’ hare, just a-blowin’ in the wind,
Ain’t seen a bed, and so long misdecent.
Now you may call him a tramp.
But I know it goes a little deeper than that: he is a highway chile.
Walk on, brother, don’t let no one stop you.
    Highway chile, yeah yeah yeah.
    Highway chile, rolling stone,
    going down the highway, go.
    Highway chile, yeah yeah,
    highway chile, go.

SERGEANT PEPPER’S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND (John Lennon & Paul McCartney)

Yeah, it was twenty years ago today,
sergeant Pepper taught the band to play.
They were going in and out of style, you know,
but they’re guaranteed to raise a big smile.
So may I introduce to you the one and only Billy Shears,
and sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.

    LITTLE WING

    LOVER MAN

    Here he comes, baby, here comes your lover man;
here he comes, here comes your lover man.
I better get out of here, get out of here as fast as I can.
    I’ll be your baby, hand me down my rocking shoes;
I’ll be your baby, hand me down my rocking shoes. (/heel vaak: Rock me baby, … my running shoes/)
I see your man come out of the window, Lord, I ain’t got no time to lose.

Here he comes, baby, here he comes, baby.
I wanna love you longer, I just wanna love you stronger,
I wanna love you longer, baby, you’ve got your man over yonder.

    JOHNNY B. GOODE (Chuck Berry)

Deep down in Louisiana, close to New Orleans,
way back up in the woods among the evergreens,
there stood an old cabin, made of earth and wood,
where lived a country boy named Johnny B. Goode,
who’d never ever learned to read or write so well,
but he could play a guitar like a-ringin’ a bell.
Go go Johnny go, go go Johnny go,
go go Johnny go, Johnny B. Goode.

He used to carry his guitar in a gunny sack,
go sit beneath the tree by the railroad track.
Old engineer in the train sittin’ in the shade,
strummin’ with the rhythm that the drivers made,
the people passin’ by they would stop and say,
“Oh my, but that little country boy could play!”
Go go Johnny go, go go Johnny go,
go go Johnny go, Johnny B. Goode.

His mother told him, “Someday you will be a man,
    and you will be the leader of a big old band;
oh, many people coming from miles around
to hear you play your guitar till the sun goes down.
Maybe someday your name’ll be in lights,
    a-saying ‘Johnny B. Goode tonight’”.
Go go Johnny go, go go Johnny go,
go go Johnny go, Johnny B. Goode.

    BLUE SUEDE SHOES (Carl Perkins)

One for the money, two for the show,
three to get ready and you can go,
and don’t you step on my blue suede shoes.
Jump up and down, jump on my face,
rock my baby, all over the place,
tell me, baby, what you wanna do,
but uh uh baby, stay off them shoes,
don’t step on my blue suede shoes,
do anything but not on my blue suede shoes.

Tear my limb for my old friend John,
steal my money, take my car.
You can do anything that you wanna do,
uh uh baby, stay off my blue suede shoes!

    IZABELLA

    Izabella, oh girl, girl, I dream about you every night;
I dream every night, hey girl.
You know we got a war, you know we got a war to fight.
So I think about you every day,
Lord, I hope you’ve been treating me right.

    Izabella, girl, I’m fighting this war for you;
hey little girl, I’ll fight this war
for the truth in the world and you.
So I hope you hear me, baby,
‘cause I’m trying to tell you it’s true, hey.

    (/Lord, I hope you’re receiving me right…
Hey Izabella, here are the rays of the rising sun; here they come.
Well I gotta go back out there and fight now, baby, I can’t quit till the devil is on the run.
So keep those dreams commin’ in strong.
Soon I’ll be holding you instead of this machine gun.
Hey Izabella, ah sweet lover, spell all my blood for you./)

Izabella, I fight this war for the children and you
Izabella, hey Izabella, baby, when I fight
you better stay tuned. Get a holdon.

    GETTIN’ MY HEART BACK TOGETHER

Have you heard about my baby, have you heard about my baby,
makin’ love to all this world.
Well, I wait around the train station, waiting for my train
to take me, take me away from this lonesome town.
Too bad you don’t love me no more, baby,
too bad your people cool (/pull/) me down, cool (/pull/) me down.

Tears burning me, tears burning in my eyes,
way down, way down in my soul, tears burning me in my soul.
Too bad you put me away, child,
well, it’s too bad you mad me go.
Yeah, well uh, well uh, I hear my train a-comin’,
    I hear my train a-comin’.

Yeah, I gotta leave this town, well, I gotta leave this town,
gonna be a voodoo chile and try to become a magic voyage,
come back and buy this town, and give it all to you.
Yeah, and you make love to me one more time, baby.
Might even give a piece to you, piece to you.
Yeah, I hear my train a-comin’, hear my train a-comin’.

    MIDNIGHT LIGHTNING

We gotta keep moving, gotta keep on grooving,
understand both sides all the time.
We gotta keep on loving, good sweet loving,
make love on my dying bed.
I get stoned when I can’t go home when I’m calling
    long distance saxophone.
My head is dizzy and shaking.
Sometimes when my whole soul is so tired and naked,
feel like I got ran over by public opinion and the past.
    Look out, Roma,
we gotta keep on rocking, don’t look back
now is over time to strike it right.

But I’m looking for that one girl for me.
    Until I find my true love, I [ refuse to search destiny ]. [?niet zeker/not sure/50%? :-p ]
Until I find her, I’m just a Rolling Stone, hey.

You say you’re a woman, at least that’s what you say you are.
And then I find you out, baby, all over my guitar, in, baby, my guitar.
So, this makes you the same as one of them.
You look at the real me and pull me outside.

  • Mitch Mitchell's Greatest Hits

    Nov 16 2008, 7h42 por rfduck

Jimi Hendrix Experience drummer Mitch Mitchell passed away this week. He was probably my favorite drummer. I always enjoy hearing what crazy things he did on Jimi's recordings.

Here are ten of my favorite Mitch Mitchell performances, in no particular order:

    1) Crosstown Traffic (from Electric Ladyland)

Mitch wasn't merely a psychedelic jazz rocker. He could funk it up too, as this groove-based ditty shows.

    2) Manic Depression (from Are You Experienced)

This is one of Mitch's greatest. People always comment that this is Mitch's song as much as it is Jimi's. He keeps pounding away and doesn't ever let up.

    3) Can You See Me (from Are You Experienced)

Here, Mitch simply attacks you with his drumming. Each hit of the drumstick is like a gunshot exploding.

    4) Ain't No Telling (from Axis: Bold As Love)

Mitch's crazy drumming keeps the tempo as high as it can go. Mitch brought the ability to rock just as much as Jimi did.

    5) Voodoo Chile (from Electric Ladyland)

This long jam is a feast of amazing musicianship. The guitar squeals, the organ screams, and Mitch Mitchell pounds away like his life depends on it. I don't know how he kept his energy going that long.

    6) Up From The Skies (from Axis: Bold As Love)

This is the closest Jimi Hendrix ever got to playing jazz. Mitch brings his jazz background to the foreground here, laying down a silky groove with the brushes.

    7) Third Stone From The Sun (from Are You Experienced)

This is another example of Mitch's jazz playing. He mixes it up with jazzier sections and sections that rock. He could do it all.

    8) Fire (from Are You Experienced)

Here, Mitch is basically playing lead. The verses feature his strong playing, punctuated by the guitar and bass. This is one of Jimi's best songs, and Mitch's performance makes it happen.

    9) Wait Until Tomorrow (from Axis: Bold As Love)

This is some of Mitch's heaviest drumming. It sounds as if he's going to puncture the drums with his sticks at any moment.

    10) Catfish Blues (from Blues)

Jimi wails away on guitar, and Mitch keeps up with him every step of the way. Mitch even gets a solo, and puts it to good use.

I would say that Mitch's best drumming album is Axis: Bold As Love. His playing is commanding and spectacular on most of the album's cuts. He played in several different styles on this album, but all of them are pure Mitch Mitchell.

    He will be greatly missed.
  • All Along The Watchtower

    Out 22 2008, 9h19 por richardrw

On October 23rd 1968 - 40 years ago this week - the Jimi Hendrix version of Bob Dylan's ''All Along The Watchtower'' was released. By way of tribute I want to talk first about the lyrics and then about the two versions of the song.

The lyrics are of course about Dylan, who sees himself as the 'joker' i.e. a figure who with the thief stands on the outside of the established order. He is taken advantage of by the establishment, represented by the princes keeping view 'all along the watchtower'. Hence the 'businessmen drink my wine' and ' I can't get no relief'.

Long story short -and there is a lot in these lyrics - the song culminates in two riders i.e. joker and the thief who are the outsiders - approaching the watchtower, (perhaps of some fortified town - representing the established interest), and of the impending confrontation - characterised by the wildcat growling and the wind beginning to howl.

Turning now to Dylan's song, what is remarkable to me is how sparce are both the lyrics and the music to go with them. Compared to some of his earlier, eight minute, eight verse epics, these three brief verses with no chorus are entirely spare in comparison. The eloquence then is more in the minimal lyric than in the music.

Conversely with the Hendrix version the eloquence of the song is all in the guitar playing. These lyrics don't come over well from Jimi - since it's a personal statement from Dylan about the confrontation of his values with those of the wider world in which he lives. Hendrix even forgets one of the lines, and/or gives us something else instead, that doesn't make any sense i.e. where Dylan sings - ''None of them along the line know what any of it is worth" and Jimi sings ''None will level on the line, Nobody of it is worth''

And yet what sublime guitar playing! Surely no-one before or since has produced as unique a sound from his/her guitar as Hendrix has. Jimi's guitar solos on this song invoke so very well those feelings of impending uncertainty and a confrontation ahead. And instinctively we the listeners feel the tension in the music and the gradual build up towards the crescendo at the very end. At this point the repetition of the high note in insistant manner could very well represent the howling of the wind; or as with Neil Young at the end of his epic 'Southern Man' the repetative high notes give us alternatively a sense of urgency in the music.

When I listen to the Hendrix version - even 40 after I first heard it - it still takes my breath away! Whilst they are essentially two different songs, that bear no direct comparison, in the sense of preferring one version to the other, I would nonetheless be intrigued to know what Dylan thinksof the Hendrix version of his song.
  • My Top 5 Favourite Guitarists

    Jun 1 2008, 1h23 por Gibson1976

I was inspired by Co-Z to make my own list. His list was possibly the best list I've ever seen, I agree on all his least favourites :P. Here's my list:

    Top 5

    5.)
Jimi Hendrix-Jimi Hendrix,The Jimi Hendrix Experience.

Is it neccessary to explain why.. check out this video

    4.)
Stevie Ray Vaughn-Stevie Ray Vaughn,Stevie Ray Vaughn And Double Trouble

This guy is AMAZING on the guitar I'd say. He isn't the best technical player, but man oh man he is an AWESOME player in his own bloody way. Lots and lots of soul in his stuff. Check out his duel with Jeff Beck

    3.)
Jimmy Page-Led Zeppelin,The Yardbirds,Page and Plant,Jimmy Page and The Black Crowes

The List Goes On And On..

I always liked Page. Even before I was a fan of Zeppelin to be honest. He is a very unique player, he isn't a mind blowing player I think, but man I'd kill to see him and Zeppelin again. Rumour has it that there going on a world tour.

    2.)
    Angus Young-AC/DC

Thats right I'm sure you all saw this coming. Angus to be honest isn't a really good guitar player technical wise or scalier wise. But he is a really really good entertainer. There is just something about this guy I'm not sure what it is, I love his style, I love his stage act. Great guitarist, go check out AC/DC if you haven't already. Rumour has it that there new album will be out late summer/early fall reported by Brian Johnson.

    1.)
    Eric Clapton-John Mayall and The Bluesbreakers,The Yardbirds,Cream,Derek and the Dominos,Blind Faith,Eric Clapton

This was a tough choice, Angus respectively could have easily taken this spot, but Clapton I think deserves it much more. His playing is just awesome, his solo's make me want to quit playing guitar period.. have fun MathiasPage at the Clapton Concert!
