I'm a fan (and you should be too) because...well i don't know about you, but for me he was my entrance to especially jazz and in a way also to music in general. I got so fascinated by his music in my teenage years that i travelled back in history to understand him, tracking all guys with whom he had played and discovering a lot of music in that way. He definitively changed my interest in music in general and jazz especially. And yes I STARTED with the electric Miles (Big Fun and Bitches Brew) and by admiring him i got acquainted with the earlier periods of his music and jazz in general.

Live-Evil omg. That CD is ....sex. I mean, Bitches Brew is RIDICULOUS, but, the deeper into the Electric period I went, the lighter it seemed to me. @_@ Live-Evil though was remarkable. Love it.

Live-Evil is heavily underrated in Mile's discography.

Listening to Dark Magus for the first time has blown my mind. I need more money and time so I can go ahead and buy Agharta and Pangaea.

I recommended Mederic Colignon " Shangri - Tunkashi - La " , his new record is great with many Miles e lectric tunes.

Hi folks. May I recommend Paul Tingen's excellent book enitled 'Miles Beyond' (67-91) as wonderful text fodder whilst indulging in Miles's primitive drum n bass. I also advise a quick scan on you tube - 'miles live and brutal berlin 1973' - to see it alive in the flesh.

Just groovin' with "Go ahead John" from BIG FUN, McLaughlin is stellar on this cut (as usual!)

68-75 was a quality and overlooked period. You can hear a lot of its influence seeping into modern music of many varied styles.Good to see this era is getting the respect it deserves via groups like this.

Spot on. So good to see other afficionados of this era. Respect to his earlier albums, but this is when Miles was pushing the boundaries the furthest, creating completely new sounds and arrangements, and abstract compositions that are simply not of this Earth! Hero.

Big Fun & Get Up With It. Then there are the live sets from the same period: Black Beauty, Live at Filmore, Live-Evil, Live at Philharmonic Hall, Dark Magus, Agharta and Pangaea (especially these last 3). Then there are dozens of unofficial releases and even more bootlegs...

I might be in the minority here, but I actually don't particularly like Miles' work in the 80s, that's why I only went up until his retirement.

No need to close this period at 1975, later work contains also briljant pieces!

:) and it only lasted 2 days... (and right now I'm probably one (?) of the reasons for getting Gil Scott-Heron so high up; saw him in his prime in NY, and got so fascinated by his bio - what integrity!!! Also glad I have one of his best albums, in original, from that time... Interesting also, since he was one of the biggest inspirations to the upcoming rapping, young generations, whose gangsta wing he had a thing or two to comment on when coming back w/ one of his rare albums...)

Yep, but it's only on the "overall" charts, not in the unique ones, where you instead find Miles & John C at the top, and also the great late Freddie H!

who cares why it's all men. can't we have something that is ours? throw your rubbers overboard because there's no one here but men. i jest. but i am curious what's in the "wiring" that the electric jazz rock, fz, prog rock all attract mostly men

I highly recommend Tom Jenkinson aka Squarepusher's album 'Music is rotted one note' as a subsequent listen to Davis' On the Corner.

It seems i inadvertently regressed to a musical content in an attempt to deconstruct my favourites. I think unification of this groups connected artists is isomorphic to a compact discourse of that content i mentioned. Superb connected artist combination i must say.

O.k., you might have a point there, but I've also read an interview with a distinguished female mastering engineer who said women preferred more bass than men. As for electric, many women like house, disco, electro-pop, Madonna, and the likes, and they sure like electric guitars, so I’m not sure about that theory. “Big sound” might have something to do with it, although I think (as with free-jazz) that it is also a lot of narcissism in Miles music from this period. Just recall the Bitches Brew live sessions, for example at Woodstock; i.e., these are very self-centered guys playing. And the Pangae/Dark Magus lineup was even worse in this regard. Women like to get attention, whether it is by artists or by partners (by this, I mean the right kind of attention, not misdirected attention, if you see what I mean). Narcissism is, of course, probably connected to the “big sound”. These two hypotheses are not mutually exclusive for sure.

Less ballads. Big sound, heavy on the bass and drums. Lots of everything electric. This is why I think this period appeals more to men than women.

Still pretty cool charts in this group!

Considering the gender distribution among our members, I wonder why it is that the music of the "Electric Miles" period seems to attract an almost entirely male audience? I know that most (if not all) women in this group were hand-recruited at a point when we were not even ten members, so it is an interesting condition to think about. There is something very masculine, I guess, with Miles music, at least from these years, but that doesn't explain it all since there are other genres one might associate with "masculinity" more than this music. Or it may not be "masculinity" as such, but apparently there is something of sort at work here. Something to ponder about for sure.... ... ...

just happened upon the group by chance. electric miles is one of my aural passions. nowhere else in jazz have i experienced the same chemistry and innovation with such thrilling results. and what a wild ride it is going from "miles in the sky" (so sadly underrated) to the mighty "pangaea." we really need a box for "pangaea" and "agharta" - the complete osaka sessions or other.

This is my favorite period of Miles. As good as Kind of Blue is, I haven't listened to it in a few years, but I listen to Bitches Brew once a month. I think Big Fun is my favorite 70's album.

    agosto 2008
  • DetroitSoulJazz

We need a little bit more eclecticism, I think. Before there were quite many other genres, like afrobeat, funk, experimental and free jazz, psychedelia, p-funk, even rock or even modern classic music, indian influences, afro-cuban jazz, NuJazz, etc. Now, streaming seems to have narrowed down to 50's jazz, and some 60s, or ECM-style jazz. Although other styles occur, they do so much less frequent.

Well, what's banned in Britain is fine for Detroit, although being totally wickedly insane of course! / p.s. No one seems to question the existence of the Detroit Twin-city named "DeafRow" in Antarctica with 347 subjects, where the Mothership most likey will stop by on its SpaceDelicmentThang' tour. Would you believe?

And 2 more weeks to get to 20!! By the way DSJ, what are you on? Whatever it is it's sure to be banned in Britain.
