wake up poland, it’s nine o’clock, is the side project of two college students in Eau Claire, WI. Phil Grey’s main work is with The Messenger Lay Asleep, which is an electronic-based project, with all instruments and vocals done by Grey. Paul Brandt is the singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist for Eau Claire band Cranes & Crows, which just released their debut album, Blame Winter. Brandt is also a member of Meridene and The Gentle Guest, and formerly of now-defunct Fine.

wake up poland originally began as a place to put new demos of songs, but quickly became a concept project. Every weekend for an entire semester, the two have recorded a new song at two in the morning (at which point it is nine in Poland) using one microphone in a small dorm room. The goal of the project is to capture late night life in the small confines of Governors Hall. Random noises, both planned and unplanned, can be heard throughout the recordings, as people talk loudly outside their door, microwaves turn on and off, and TVs flip through channels.

Grey and Brandt have decided to make all of their recordings available for free download, but also plan to put their project to CD when it is completed. It will be released (at no cost, besides any donations) at their first public performance at Acoustic Cafe in Eau Claire on May 10, 2008.
