Sootytern are a four piece folky band that strum-pluck-plod-thump their way through slices of whimsical, touching and the-good-kind-of-twee songs. Melting a bricolage of influences from British Sea Power’s Albion eccentricity to Jeff Mangum of Neutral Milk Hotel’s open heart - Sootytern are an eiderdown for the ears: warm and comforting.

Fact 1: The Sooty Tern is native to many equatorial islands. Sootytern are native to Northwest England’s expansive sand flats and craggy archipelagoes.

Making their debut at “Best Small Festival 2010 and 2011”, Kendal Calling, Sootytern have patronised Leeds’ legendary Brudenell Social Club, The grapes in Sheffield (both supporting Nat Johnson and the Figureheads) and Liverpool’s ‘Bombed Out Church’, St. Luke’s.

Fact 2: The Sooty Tern is also known as the ‘wideawake’ Tern. Sootytern make music that is both charmingly effervescent and heavy lidded.

Hailing from bubble-like hometowns and free from the ritualised homogenisation being part of a ‘scene’ can lead to. Sootytern’s material draws from such diverse themes as popular science, space, physics, planets, computing, being northern, people they hate, drinking a lot and our collective mortality.

Fact 3: The Sooty Tern has black upperparts and white underparts. Sootytern decline to comment on any similarities.
