“I embrace all genres as long as they’re Pop in all its flavours:
Power, Soul, Brit, Alt, Broadway, Edgy, Chamber, Creepy, Ambient, Country, etc,” Dizz explains.
This pan-Pop ethic is clearly evident in Dizz’ work. On r2’s latest, dabble we set out on a journey from 21st century Delta Blues to Silverlake Piano Pop. Float in a sea of green courtesy of George Martin horns on your way back home with a full-gospel tilt. Power Pop your way through a funk-guitar raga, take a left into 19th century Paris atmospheric Pop and into the streets of London, circa 1969.
How does Dizz move so fluently between genres, equally at home in the blues or Broadway? Years ago, Dizz embraced a method where he will write ‘at will’ 12 songs in 12 keys in 12 genres in 12 days. He is a firm believer in the ‘songwriter as channeler’ school.
“It’s easy once you get out of your own way. You stop judging what’s great and what’s awful and out pour the songs.”
Dizz’ favoured craft is producing and arranging. He loves making records.
“The ability to find the essence of a song, to craft an arrangement to lend prosody to the vocal and most importantly, to know when to stop is what I love most about the process. And it gives me the ability to go to work every day down at the music factory.”
