the music of original best friend first took root in experiments in home recording. after a lengthy process of trial and error, charted in ‘home recordings 08’, obf arrived at a simpler, stripped down sound in ‘which way to jerusalem?’ … , relying more on the strengths of lyricism than musical depth, the contrast being evident when comparing tracks such as ‘i ain’t got no religion’ and ‘runner’ to ‘sold the pieces of my heart’ and ‘cupboard grows bearer’.
obf’s more recent material (millmead recordings) sees a return to a broader sound, featuring the musical collage of progressive melodic and rhythmic ideas, used in the tracks ‘tired’ and ‘arguments (step by step)’.
spending his time recording music and playing open mic nights, for now obf can be found in Bristol.
