Tokyo, Japan (1997 – present)

m-flo is one of the biggest names in Japanese urban music, and became such by bringing together foreign influences and Japanese sensibilities. The group’s nucleus of composer/trackmaker/producer ☆Taku Takahashi and rapper Verbal first became friends while the two were attending St. Mary’s International School, a Tokyo based international high school. Later Taku moved to California, where he worked as a DJ and began composing. At this juncture the ethnically Korean Verbal went to school in Boston, where he also got deeper into rap music. Verbal also got into Christianity, so much that he majored in theology, but his friend Taku convinced him to return to Tokyo to pursue music.

In 1997 they hooked up again in Tokyo, and brought into their musical circle the Japanese-Colombian female singer Lisa, who attended Seisen International School, St. Mary’s sister school. Lisa had already begun working in music, including serving as vocalist for the group ram jam world. The group released their first song been so long as a 12-inch single on an indie label, and were soon picked up by the Avex-affiliated Rhythm Zone label. From Avex they released a string of hit singles, and then their debut album Planet Shining, which went to #6 on the Oricon album chart. The group followed this success up with the re-mix album THE REPLACEMENT PERCUSSIONISTS and a sold-out tour. The group also toured in Korea, where they were well received.

m-flo should remember they once made a song like Lotta Love and stop trying so hard to be relevant again. Taku needs to stop mixing crappy UK and american music and copying all of it horribly and verbal just needs to just keep being extravagant and I think they could make a good album again. Until then, Square One is still horrible. And will always be horrible and the worst thing they have done in their career.

"I thought it sounded like a capsule album" it sounded nothing like a capsule album since capsule albums aren't overly tacky and gaudy. Granted WoF was gaudy it at least was consistent and didn't bite off of every sound in the mainstream and reproduce it poorly. Granted Player is as scatterbrained as Square One at least Player has amazing songs to make up for the one or two bad ones. I just re-listened to cosmicolor for the first time in like 2 years and got really sad at the very end because that album is way too good. Then I remembered Square One existed and got even sadder because of how bad Square One is.

I saw m-flo live today!! melody. appeared, which made me ultra happy, since it's her first appearance since her retirement afaik. However, Mat Cab covered Ryohei Yamamoto's part, so it wasn't a full-blown reunion unfortunately. (And yeah, Mat Cab is the singer of "Yesterday"). There was a mash-up of "Taste Your Stuff" (vocals by Minami) and BEP's "I Gotta Feeling", so the BEP comparisons are apt. I had some problems with the concert (like uhh, you guys are honestly going to play a solid minute of "Shots" by Lil' Jon in the first fifteen minutes of your show?? I'm at an m-flo concert, not one of your DJ sets guys), but the last half-hour was just perfect.

Idk, feels like I'm listening to a japanese Black Eyed Peas album or something half the time [3] That's actually a really good way to describe it. It's growing on me though.

@Mizore-senpai I hate to say it but I think 2NE1 brought more new listeners in than Kashiyuka.

I thought it sounded like a capsule album, but with Verbal's raps instead of Toshiko Koshijima's vocals, which wasn't bad to me considering m-flo and capsule are my two favorite Japanese groups. I just don't feel that Square One will age as well as the other five albums.

I actually enjoyed the album, not as good as their previous, but solid enough.
