iordache was born in 1967 in Bucharest, Romania, as Mihai Iordache, and began playing saxophone in 1990, under the influence of Charlie Parker, Lee Konitz and Ornette Coleman, whom he tried to imitate.

His first professional gig as a saxophone player was playing a solo on a song by a rock group called Timpuri noi. After that came a stint with Harry Tavitian’s Blues Community. In ‘93 he started a jazz trio, which didn’t last long enough to produce anything. Then he played in a punk-rock group, invented by poet Florin Dumitrescu around his bittersweet and humorous lyrics. It was very successful for some years and they recorded a few albums. He quit them in ‘99, as they drifted towards pop. Meanwhile he also played with pianist Lucian Ban’s Jazz Unit.
Then he played with Vlaicu Golcea’s Rebop Factory then began transcribing big band music to learn some arranging. One of the most difficult things he had chosen were written by Sun Ra so he sought up some of his other records and also read his biography by John Szwed. Out of this came the idea of a band called “Outer Space Seven”, a septet dedicated to Sun Ra’s music. After two concerts, for obvious reasons, the Seven had turned into Five.

Around 2001 after an event which changed some of his ideas about life he started writing his own music. At first it was performed alongside the Sun Ra material by the Outer Space Five (with Sorin Romanescu on guitar, Vlaicu Golcea on bass…and any good drummer they could find). Then as his tunes were replacing the old playlist he re-named the band “iordache”.
