(2001 – 2012)

Implosion Quintet was a studio project written, performed and produced by James R Baker. The genre-bending style included balkan, jazz, metal, tango, retro electronics, opera, funk and blues. The project began in 2001, matching lo-fi latin-guitar and electronic elements using a Playstation. In 2005 some of this work caught indie label Cookshop’s ear and several tracks were released on split EPs and a compilation. Several free EPs were released throughout 2006 and 2007, and in summer 2009 Cookshop released The future sound of yesterday album.

January 2012 saw the end of the project, with the website replaced by a farewell message:

After much deliberation, I’ve decided to shut down Implosion Quintet. After 2009’s The Future Sound of Yesterday album, it’s clear that the concepts behind IQ have run their course. 2011 marked 10 years of the project, and I feel a decade is more than enough following any one muse. Time to move on.

sand leaper wrote about implosion quintet, "Influences span what sounds like Astor Piazzolla jamming with a merry band of gypsies, bluesy twang that B.B. King would nod along approvingly to and even some loungey synth affairs that sound like Air in the Moon Safari-era on a very, very bad trip." so of course, i had to check out astor piazzolla. i'm pleased to be introduced to both implosion quintet and astor piazzolla. thx jan !!
