Berlin, Germany (2003 – 2005)

Escape the Day was a post-rock band from Berlin, Germany formed in 2003, which took influence from acoustic and ambient music.

Its unreleased album “Ghostless” (2005) was put on hold due to the suicide of band member Christoph Florian Rehse (1979-2005).

In 2005 Escape the Day has stopped its activity and is forever dedicated to the love and memory of Florian. Escape the Day’s work was described as “Great music for lonely walks, hangovers or just falling asleep.”

I don't think there's any neat and tidy genre for Escape The Day, Post-Rock is many things and i think it fittingly falls under it...Post-Rock isn't always God Is An Astronaut type hyper-melodic style, or Godspeed You Black Emperor! style darkness. Post-Rock casts a wide net and it is a lot about atmospheres and feelings, which Escape The Day touch on amazingly. It's certainly not Indie, DEFINITELY not emo, hard to classify as straight Rock and really...any other genre just doesn't fit. Things don't always have to be able to be neatly packaged when it comes to musical genres, few things sit perfectly within one genre these days anyway

I couldn't really recommend anything that quite touches on this level of emotion and quality. Perhaps the closest could recommend would be any Autumnblaze album (especially Bleak and Words Are Not What They Seem), Katatonia (Discouraged Ones and Tonight's Decision share qualities with Escape The Day, maybe Viva Emptiness at a stretch), Antimatter's album Leaving Eden (as well as all the songs Mick Moss did with Antimatter on the albums before Leaving Eden) and also Aeon Spoke share similarities in some ways (the album Above The Buried Cry). Outside of those recommendations you'll find bands in the Post-Rock genre are most similar, band's such as French Teen Idol, God Is An Astronaut etc.
