Djembafan (The drum boys) consists of Derrick Mokwena and friends of Kanyamazane, Mpumalanga. After a near fatal accident in 1996, which paralyzed him for three months, Derrick devoted himself to music. Struggling for many years to find someone who shared his passion, he finally convinced Louis to break away with his and take a chance. Louis jumped at the opportunity to follow his mentor and best friend. A year later they met up with Authentic Expression’s Clive Watson, established themselves as djembafan and recorded their debut Album Groove Africa due for afficial release in Feb/March 2002. The Album is of a unique African style with a Latin edge throw in - Afro-Island if you will!
Derrick and Louis captivated audience with their warmth and humility. Together they even get couch potatoes to move with the groove. And for those who understand the lingo, their simple Zulu truths ring true. Groove Africa is also Authentic Expression’s debut into the music world. The Album speaks for itself, from its unique handmade pine cover to the natural rhythms of the music. These covers are an incentive of Authentic Expression to give disabled and previoulsy disadvantiged people an opportunity to improve the quality of their lives. Currently doing promotional work for Groove Africa, djembafan are also selling their first cd’s of which they made the covers themselves.
