Tango Elena (7:03)

Cover of Tangos for Beginners

From Tangos for Beginners

Tango Elena embodies a number of disparate elements: attempts at a genuine tango style; flamenco and middle eastern historical influences - a complex, stylistic ‘Russian doll’ where cultural influences hide inside other accepted formal ‘conventions’ which can be thought of as being part of the Tango genre but perhaps, in reality, are not.

All this has been ‘boiled down’ to produce an interpretation of the tango which has been distilled through my stylistic foibles and treated in a way which brings out my own invention/imagination — or lack thereof! It is as inauthentic a tango as you can get — but it is, unashamedly, genuine Chris Gordon. Yet, it is first and foremost an honest statement of gratitude expressed for the person who inspired the music in the first place — no more, no less — and this statement is delivered in a form which she would appreciate: a musical ‘testament’ and gift which conveys, speaks of, a deeper spiritual connection tempered by universal unconditional love which envelopes us all.

The tango is pleasingly noted, based in the rhythm, yet noticed throughout. I really like this Chris. *Adding to library and tag radios*
