Biography

Broadcast was a British band formed in 1995 in Birmingham, England. The band's style explored 1960s influences like and early music through indie , heavily influenced by both the 1960s American psychedelic group The United States of America and the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, using many of the same electronic effects and atmospheres. Their music fell under the style of British first wave -adjacent retrofuturistic acts like Stereolab and Pram.

They originally consisted of Trish Keenan (vocals), Tim Felton (guitar), James Cargill (bass), Roj Stevens (keyboards) and Steve Perkins (drums). Perkins and Stevens left the band in 2000, and Felton left in 2004. Stevens released a solo album under the name Roj, and Felton formed the group Seeland with Billy Bainbridge from the similar act Plone. The band was chosen by Matt Groening to perform at the All Tomorrow's Parties festival he curated in May 2010 in Minehead, Somerset, England. After the January 2011 death of Trish Keenan from complications caused by pneumonia, James Cargill has since pursued other projects.

Broadcast released three studio albums: The Noise Made by People (2000), Haha Sound (2003), and Tender Buttons (referencing Gertrude Stein's experimental book of poetry of the same name) (2005) on Warp Records, as well as several EPs and a collaborative album with the Focus Group titled Broadcast and The Focus Group Investigate Witch Cults of the Radio Age (2009). Their final release as a group was the archival compilation Distant Call, released in 2024.

The band's first releases were singles released on Wurlitzer Jukebox Records ( "Accidentals" ) and Duophonic Records ("The Book Lovers") in the mid-1990s. "The Book Lovers" was also featured on the soundtrack of the film Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery. They attracted the attention of Warp Records, who compiled the singles in 1997 on Work and Non Work.

Broadcast have since retained a cult following with underground music listeners and musicians alike, with fans ranging from Bradford Cox of Deerhunter to Oneohtrix Point Never.
