Altar of Plagues create dense, expansive and textural black metal, which incorporates elements of progressive metal. They have toured with acts such as Mayhem and Isis, and this is characteristic of the diversity of their sound.

Their debut album, “White Tomb” was released by Profound Lore records in 2009, with a vinyl edition released by Deviant Records in Fall 2009. The Sol E.P will also be released on vinyl by Deviant Records by the end of 2009. There is an upcoming EP release on Burning World/Roadburn Records set for release in March 2010, as well as a full European tour that will include a performance at the Roadburn Festival.

So, if you like "atmospheric black metal" bands, then there's a chance you might like Altar of Plagues?

I care far more about quality than I care about genre labels. That said, there are some genres that appeal to me far less than others do so I won't say genre labels don't matter to me at all.

People who say genre labels are unimportant are idiots. I want to know what a band sounds like before I bother listening to their music.

I can see where this is going. Altar of Plagues are definitely atmospheric black metal, how one can deny their definite "atmospheric" and "black metal" quality I don't understand. The "black metal/post-rock camp" describes atmospheric black metal 90% of the time from my understanding. That's all I'm going to say, I'm not going to get into a meaningless pissing contest.

Altars of Plagues aren't post-black metal or atmospheric black metal. They're in the black metal/post-rock camp (all of which sucks, I hasten to add). Post-black metal is stuff like Sigh and Arcturus and Atmospheric Black Metal is stuff like The Ruins of Beverast.

I get what you're saying destruktornaut, but you could keep pushing to the point where it's all just referred to as "music" which can be further generalised. When something stands away from the crowd it needs to be classified, hence the absolute clusterfuck of made-up genres that seem to dominate metal and most other main genres. P_cell's hit the nail on the head really

I'm still getting the impression that "post-black metal" is just a fancier or more pretentious way of saying "atmospheric black metal". The way people have described post-black metal's characteristics seems to be exactly the way I'd describe atmospheric black metal. I can let "post-metal" slide on occasion but I'm not letting this slide. Altar of Plagues is atmospheric black metal and no I'm claiming to be the arbiter of genres in this case.

Still redundant, because it's still just black metal at the end of the day. Maybe if the music was a significant evolution in the sound, but it really isn't. Altar of Plagues is an excellent band with a killer sound and a solid, focused philosophy behind their music, but there's nothing particularly innovative about it. The problem with the post prefix is that it's all about implication, no one can objectively say 'this is what it means' because it really doesn't mean anything.

"Post" implies a deviation from the norms and conventions of a particular genre, but yet still retaining the essence of the genre. Postmodernism, for example, was a result of Modernism. It took modernism, turned it on its head and set fire to its house, but remained a result of Modernism. In the same way, Post-Black Metal as it's being described here is taking the key elements of black metal: tremelo based riffs, atmospheric sound, high speed drums, unconventional song structure, screamed vocals and a misanthropic world view (note, those are just the common aspects I can pick off the top of my head, I'm not saying that those ARE black metal) and pushing it a little further. It's musical innovation on a genre, that quite frankly, has run its course as far as the corpsepaint, "Arg, Satan" and church burnings of the 90's did. Anything nowadays that presents itself that way is just irrelevant masturbation, in my opinion.

Post-(anything) is just a word to say when you don't know what's coming next. Or else you want to sound cool. This band sounds like the real deal, whatever that is!
