Splank! – is the brain behind Zombie Nation. In the 1990s, he spent most of his time working as a DJ and party organiser in empty factories and bunkers. The main idea was to revive long-forgotten places just for one night and to provide a constantly changing situation in order to create the perfect moment. And of course to be able to DJ without any compromises…
“Working for the perfect moment” is how Splank! still describes his work with Zombie Nation. Get the best out of every single live moment and prove it again and again in every new situation. A risk-loving attitude and well-approved hardware equipment is what he needs to rearrange spontaneously and to directly react to the crowd. In the meantime, Zombie Nation live has become a brand and is among the most successful live acts in electronic music.
Equipped with two Technics turntables and a MPC 2000, Splank! started producing his own tracks in 1997. His debut EP on DJ Hell’s International Deejay Gigolo Records was soon followed by his first album Leichenschmaus.
The track Kernkraft 400 taken from the debut EP was licensed a number of times and one remix version even entered the charts. But the game eventually became too stressful due to the rising number of different interests. More about it in ZN’s memoirs (to be published 2025). Giving up or conforming to the others was not an option, so he simply continued producing in good old Zombie manner: good means if it makes you bang your head.
In the to and fro of the upcoming new century, Splank! brought a new project to life: John Starlight. Compared to ZN, the sound was rougher and straighter. The song Blood Angels raised a lot of dust and not only Sven Vaeth voted this one “Song of the Year 2002”.
ZN’s second LP Absorber was released in 2003 with remixes of the tracks Souls At Zero and The Cut ft. My Robot Friend released on the own label Dekathlon Records.
In the beginning of 2005, the sublabel UKW Records was founded exclusively for Zombie Nation and John Starlight productions. 2006 the Zombie Nation longplayer “Black Toys” was released, considered to be “the best Zombie Album ever” by the Zombie-fans and highly acclaimed by press.
With “Peace & Greed”, one of the album highlight tracks, a remix 12” will be released on April 2nd 2007, containing 2 outstanding remixes by Yuksek and Headman.
Zombie Nation LIVE has become it´s s own brand in many countries over the years. Having played shows on all 5 continents from small clubs to all major festivals Zombie Nation is one of the most requested and successful electronic live acts today. And when we say live, it really means live arrangement and a setup that allows to responding to the audience potentially every single second. Plus: The use of Laptops as instruments is prohibited on stage for obvious reasons.
Since 2003, The track Kernkraft 400 has been a popular song at NHL games, used by numerous arenas as their goal-celebration song, and many more as a motivational beat.
