Biography

Zé Dos Frangos are an American/European indie band from Austin, Spain, Portugal, Switzerland, and Slovakia. The band combines ingredients of American alternative rock, low-fi electronic beats, and traditional Spanish music, resulting in a distinct, original flavour. All the musicians are neo-traveling gypsies–disillusioned with the American dream, looking for new value with wanderlust in their bones.

The band formed in 2007 by American expat Nathan Lively after his move to Lisbon, Portugal. He met several traveling musicians and artists from America and around the world searching for a unified sound. By happy design, the band developed as a collaboration between musicians in Lisbon and the surrounding countries Lively visited in his travels. Each musician brought their culture’s distinct musical sound to the band.

In 2008, Lively rallied native Austin and European musicians together for SXSW music festival. The Austin Chronicle listed them as one of the Top Picks of the festival. After their American debut, members of the band moved to Bratislava, Slovakia to discover their ancestral roots and record their music.

Ze Dos Frangos’s first album, Portugal/Slovakia, will release May 2009 through CD Baby in the US and AA Records in Europe and for download on iTunes/Amazon/Napster/Rhapsody. The double EP incorporates English, Portuguese, and Slovak lyrics and combines several musical genres. In true spirit of the band, the album developed from collaborations with European bands AA Tigre, The Loosers, Gala Drop, and Vanilla Club for the recording.
