About

He doesn’t have the backing of the big boys — no PR connections, no Daddy Yankee or Don Omar behind him — but the enterprising reggaeton artist Zaiter is making a name for himself the old-fashioned way: he’s earning it. Born in the Bronx to a Dominican family, Zaiter came up during rap’s golden era, and he credits songs like UTFO’s “Roxanne, Roxanne” for lighting a fire under his musical aspirations. But he owes his inspiration just as much to his father and uncles, who would gather on Sundays to eat and play music all day long. A singer who has embraced rapping and production, Zaiter moved to Tampa, Fla., to do production work, learning the ropes from none other than Dexter Redding (Otis’ son). As he began making his own music, he hooked up with the Austin-based label La Vida Music. They helped pushed the young artist to break out of formulaic reggaeton. Without much industry or radio support, his 2008 debut Imaginate began generating considerable buzz.
