Yoko Ono

Yoko Ono, born 18 February 1933 in Tokyo, is a Japanese artist most widely known for her relationship with John Lennon of The Beatles. When Yoko first met Lennon, she was an artist exhibiting in the UK. Working with art group Fluxus throughout the 1960s, Ono was a pioneer in the burgeoning conceptual art movement which included work in sculpture, performance, filmmaking and music.

Few women in the history of rock & roll have stirred as much controversy as Yoko Ono. Although her romance with Lennon was hardly the only factor straining the relationships between the Beatles, she became a convenient scapegoat for the group’s breakup and was repeatedly raked over the coals in the media for her influence over Lennon, both in his life and his music. Ono’s own work as an artist and musician didn’t mitigate the public’s enmity toward her; to the average man on the street, her avant-garde conceptual art seemed bizarre and ridiculous, and her highly experimental rock & roll (which often spotlighted her primal vocals) was simply too abrasive to tolerate. That view wasn’t necessarily universal, and in fact the merits of her work are still hotly debated.

Regardless of individual opinion, Ono has left a lasting legacy; she was an undeniably seminal figure in the history of performance art, and elements of her music prefigured the arty sides of punk and new wave (whether she was a direct influence is still debated, although The B-52’s did admit to drawing from her early records).

@Rup23 - I understand that Yoko isn't your idea of a talented artist but your arguments are very weak, I don't get the impression you've actually sat down with an open mind and listened to her music. Yoko has a different kind of talent but she is no less talented, she's a great songwriter and has great and creative musical ideas that are executed well in her music. I hope one day you can learn to see what her fans see, but you must be more open minded I feel. Yoko can actually sing when she wants to but she likes to keep things unconventional which is why I love her, try her album "Approximately Infinite Universe" and come back to the discussion, I hope you like what you hear. :-)

Yoko is an artist, people need to keep this in mind, and I mean I REAL artist (yes there is such a thing), this sadly goes over a lot of people's head. She's my favourite artist at this present time, admire her work.

And, ironically, that Fireworks video is pretty cool. A little old lady took a rubbish pop song and turned it into something that causes a reaction in people. Well done.

I must add: it's downright hilarious when a non-fan spends time finding the "worst" examples of an artist just to prove to everyone that they're incorrect in enjoying her music.

Rup23: "I have some personal reason to go on the page of an artist I'm unfamiliar with to talk shit! Most likely a combination of insecurity and boredom! When I mentioned Lennon bringing her up on stage I clearly admitted the reason I am against Ono in the first place! I am exactly one of those people who holds a grudge for the nonsense reason of her breaking up the Beatles! Oh no, someone called me out on this!"

You are displaying a cultural ignorance as much as an artistic one [2] V why do you come here to complain about Yoko Ono if you have no appreciation or knowledge about most of her music and then get upset and defensive when someone highlights that salient fact?

So what about the time she decided to belt out some dolphin noises while John Lennon jammed with Chuck Berry? Crying out for attention with a complete lack of respect? What do you say about that?
