Not quite up there with the next 2 releases but still a classic. According to Chris Squire the reason it shot to number 1 was due to a postal strike so none of the letters from record shops detailing record sales were delivered, charts were based on sales at Virgin Megastore. Their manager was friends with Branson and they made sure he stocked loads and promoted it. So Yes's huge breakthro success was probably due to the postmen of Britain.

This is not the first Yes album, it is the third. Yes and Time and a Word were released in 1969 & 1970 respectively - The Yes Album was released in 1971. This album, along with Fragile, Close to the Edge and Tales from Topographic Oceans are the are the 4 key albums of the first incarnation of the band. The first 3 are stunning. Tales from Topographic Oceans is either viewed as a great overindulgence - 4 tracks only (1 per LP side) with a total playing time of almost 81 minutes - or one of the finest examples of the scope of progressive rock.

Steve Howe is amazing, Chris Squire's bass playing is awesome and Jon Anderson voice is not of this world. When I first heard this as a 15 year old I didn't know what had hit me. For me its the beginning of Yes.
