Henrietta (4:40)

Cover of Fragrant World

From Fragrant World and 4 other releases

The Henrietta Songfacts reports this track was inspired by Henrietta Lacks, an African-American woman from Baltimore, who died in 1951 from a rare form of cancer. Her tumors and cells continued to live and grow after she passed away and the subsequent research resulted in the remarkably durable HeLa cell line, named for her first and last initials.

I adore the second half of this song. I love the way they layered all the different parts. I had no idea it was inspired by Henrietta Lacks - I think I like it even more now. (Into science and/or ethics? Read "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks.")

Just because this song is "inspired" by Henrietta Lacks, doesn't mean that it's about a cell line that is still growing.

@Trautkidd I personally think the first half is the better half. But we all have different opinions I guess!

"This song is about Henrietta Lacks, a poor black woman whose cancer cells became the first line of immortal human cells. She died in 1951. When she was being treated for cervical cancer, the doctors at Johns Hopkins took tissue samples without her consent. Though her cells have been responsible for many important discoveries, her family has never seen a dime."
