Y Blew was the first Welsh-language rock band, formed in 1967 at the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth. The band consisted of five members: Dafydd Evans (bass guitar), Maldwyn Pate (vocals), Richard Lloyd (lead guitar), Geraint Evans (drums) and David Williams (keyboards). Because of academic commitments, the band only existed for a year, but in that time made a great impact on the Welsh music scene, and perhaps led the way for other Welsh artists to make their mark, not only in Wales but also further afield.

Y Blew released one record, Maes B, written by David Williams and Maldwyn Pate.

Richard Lloyd went on to make music his career, in musical theatre and in the a cappella band the Flying Pickets, which included Gareth Williams, David’s brother. David has remained active in modern church music, and in the rock ‘n’ roll band The Lost Sheep. Dafydd Evans has published an autobiography giving a personal view of the Welsh music scene in the 50s and 60s.
