Art of Life is an album released by X Japan on August 28, 1993. It consists of only one song of the same name, which is nearly 29 minutes long, and was written and composed by Yoshiki Hayashi. The heavily orchestrated piece (recorded with the London Royal Philharmonic Orchestra) is partly based on Schubert’s unfinished Symphony No. 8 and comprises several passages of varying speed and instrumentation, including eight minutes performed solely on piano. It was rarely played live, an early performance taking place on July 30, 1992 at Nippon Budokan and two more on December 30 and 31, 1993, at the Tokyo Dome. These were later released on the Art of Life Live album and the Art of Life 1993.12.31 Tokyo Dome VHS/DVD, respectively. It was also performed at the band’s reunion concert on March 28, 2008 at the Tokyo Dome, but was cut short when Yoshiki collapsed mid-way through the song, just before the piano solo. The rest of the song was played at the same venue, two days later.

During the Hong Kong Live on 16th and 17th January 2009, X JAPAN split the song into two. performing the song from the intro to right before the piano solo on the 16th and performing the remainder on 17th January as YOSHIKI still has injuries, making him unable to play the song one shot.

This is one of my favorite songs of all time. The sheer orchestration, the piano and the guitars give me goosebumps each time I hear 'em.

Without a doubt one of the greatest musical experiences of my life. The piano part can be a bit much, but it just gets better with each listen. It's a masterpiece in every sense of the word, there's really no other way to put it.

Yuuki sums it up quite nicely. I guess the concept is a little much for people used to listening to an otherwise pretty musically "normal" band.

to me this song is one of the greatest songs ever, it's always overwhelming. I know the piano solo probably is disturbing to people who aren't used to modern classic, but after a few times listening and thinking about it this solo really shows how life is. A beautiful melody, getting stronger and higher just like the growing of a child, and then getting more and more distracted and damaged by the discords one meets in life, but then hopefully being able to still remember the own rhythm... The art in this solo is not the perfection, because it aimed to show the imperfection. I think I don't need to explain the rock music pats and lyrics, they are just great, too.

I totally agree with Itochan60. I know it was supposed to be dramatic but got only annoying after few minutes. As a former pianist I'm horrified that someone could consider chaotic smashing the keybord "true art". Poor, poor piano.

Or perhaps a drum solo? Shit, that would have been fantastic.

I struggle to make it through the piano section these days. I mean, couldn't they have varied it a little? Added some guitar noises or something?

Listening this song live was THE BEST experience of my life. It's more beautiful than being a father, more exciting than having sex for the first time, more grateful than receiving a PhD and obviously more unique than any other song played live at any concert of any band

Good song, but the piano solo is a bit too long. The closest song that I can relate to is FAITH AND DECISION by VERSAILLES, 17 min song.

Drop the bullshit emo piano middle section and this song would be so much better. It is such a good song, but come on...
