  • Album Review: Wykked Wytch - The Ultimate Deception

    Wykked Wytch
    The Ultimate Deception
    Full Length
    Goomba Music
    Symphonic Black Metal

With an illustrious career of more than 15 years, Wykked Wytch has slowly garnered a steady following, with their previous albums each garnering pretty stellar reviews. This year sees the band releasing their follow up to 2008's Memories of a Dying Whore in the form of The Ultimate Deception, and seeing how the band has often been described as a fusion of black and gothic metal has certainly got me slightly interested in the music.

The usage of symphonic elements in black metal has never been extremely appealing with me, with most bands butchering the usage, ending up with albums that sound totally pretentious, and unable to really perform live. Album opener Birthing the Beast introduces the album to the listener through a symphonic intro…

  • Wykked Wytch - Memories Of A Dying Whore

    18 Mar 2008, 16:21 by mshannes

  • Recommended #3 - Extreme Metal #1

Well, now is as good a time as ever to start a new journal entry, but first I have to say that after seeing Garden State, I have to now find a copy of Friday Night Lights since the soundtrack contains a bit of Explosions in the Sky, and it also sounds like a good film.

Anyhow, for this weeks recommended songs, I think I'll throw out some nice metal. Yes, open-mindedness is my main aim from these things, not whether people will like every suggestion I make each week.

So, I'm going to cover the extreme metal genres this week and next week, and then come back to Indie the week after =).

This week, as the title so rightly implies to you, it's all about Vikings and Black Metal. Both genres overlap so nicely that it's almost a given thing to put them both together. Many bands will sound pretty much like they belong in one rather than the other, but since genres mean different things to different people, I'll put them as I see them.
