Wuthering Heights

Originally formed in the beginning of the nineties, the symphonic speed metal band Wuthering Heights started to draw attention in the small metal-scene of Copenhagen. Different musicians as well as names like Minas Tirith and Vergelmir have come and gone in the history of the band, and the only founding member in the band today is Erik Ravn.

The bands first studio-experience was in 1994/95, when they recorded the Vergelmir demo-tape at the famous Sweet Silence Studio (Metallica, Blind Guardian etc. ) in Copenhagen. Although the demo-tape didn’t quite get the desired production, it accomplished it’s task, as it circulated through the European metal-underground where it was well received in countries like Italy and Germany.

The next major event in the history of Wuthering Heights was in 1996/97 when they were one of the bands featured on the compilation-CD “Extremity Rising Vol.2” made by Serious Entertainment. The song used on that CD was “Sorrow In Memoriam”, which nicely sums up all that Wuthering Heights is about: Huge compositions, great orchestral parts, folk-influences, intriguing lyrics, up-tempo (speed) and progressive metal.

In summer of 1997 the band finally got a deal with a German record label, who (for some reason) were convinced that the band played gothic/epic metal. This co-operation resulted in the demoCD “Within”, which saw the band heading in a more progressive power/speed metal direction, leading to the break-up with this label.

Within is a seriously great album. The others are all really good, but Within has a little more "moxie". Or something.

Well, since no-one reads separate songs' boxes anyway, I think I'll post this here too: "I just god damn love the lines "But this tune that I'm destroying / Shows there's nothing more annoying / Than a desperate, desperate poeeeeeeeeeeYEEEEEEEEEAAAAHT"! :DD Nils has some unbelievable power delivering that sequence, and it's just so nicely said anyway. Why don't grand artists like Erik Ravn never realize how good they truly are? Their ambitions must be somewhere in unbelievable heights! "Oh, this song is nothing yet, I must do much better. I'm a desperate poet, WAAAH!". Fuck you. You're genius! And you have pretty much the best vocalist on earth at your disposal, and you have the unique ability to take even more out of his lungs than other songwriters that have him. So, come on now. If health provides: one last record! Or one last dozen of records! (I don't believe Erik will never read this, but that's what I feel like saying atm. :D)"

Oh, there are news! Forums 20/3: "Hello friends, Since rumours are starting to spread about the band working on new material, I guess I should give a little input on the state of things. Unfortunately, I´m still in a very bad state regarding my health. I can basically do nothing and am enduring constant violent pains. Any kind of recovery seems very far removed right now. I´m currently waiting to talk to the doctors with regards to possible additional surgery. Bottom line is, the prospects are not very good. So, as you may have guessed, I will have to say that there won´t be any new stuff from WH in the near future. I´ve been exchanging a few song ideas with Nils Patrik, and I have a few ideas for lyrics, but that´s all. I´m not playing and I´m not recording. I´m really sorry if you´ve gotten your hopes up. But I will say this: your continuing interest in the band and your words of support mean so much to me, and I humbly thank you for it. In hope of a future for WH, I salute you!" :/

Any updates on how their new material is coming out? I thought Erik Ravn was done for?

Just listened to Salt. It's flawless. Yet it's only their third best album, IMO. Sorry guys; if you're Wuthering Heights, you pretty much have to surpass even perfect albums to make your best ever! :D That's tough to accomplish if they truly are to be back shortly... (My only complaints about Salt are the weak-ish production and the lessened diversity in NP's vocals compared to the previous two albums. I still think they had to finish Salt in a hurry; didn't they be late from their deadline, too?)
