Olympia WA, United States (2004 – present)

During the Summer of 2002 at an Earth First rendezvous in the Cascade Mountains of Washington State, guitarist Nathan Weaver was inspired to create a band that merged a Cascadian eco-spiritual awareness with the misanthropic Norwegian eruptions of the 90’s. The band envisioned would strive to create a mythic space where artist and listener alike could strip away the mindset of the mundane to reveal a more ancient and transcendent consciousness. The mysterious and wild energies of the untrammeled forests of the Northwest would be channeled into sonic form.

In the Spring of 2004, Nathan and his brother, drummer Aaron Weaver, moved to a dilapidated farmstead on the outskirts of Olympia, WA. The creation of their farm-stronghold, called Calliope, would be intrinsically linked to the development of Wolves in the Throne Room. It was during the first long, dark winter living in the collapsed farmhouse at Calliope that the band developed their trance-inducing sound and solidified the burning intent that would animate the band’s music. Elements of , , music, and music were drawn upon to create a unique alchemy.

Since that time Wolves in the Throne Room have ascended to the upper tiers of the underground scene by creating a transformative and apocalyptic musical manifestation that has come to completely transcend the black metal label.

Wolves in the Throne Room’s first studio album, the lush and atmospheric Diadem of 12 Stars (A Shimmering Radiance), was released in the Spring of 2006. This gloriously sprawling record was captured on tape by Tim Green at Louder Studios in San Francisco.

Exactly what I do. Not to mention that I can't stop air-drumming sometimes, ha ha. Especially while listening to Black Cascade.

I'm all for "getting into it" in a totally emotional and spiritual way. When I listen to Wolves in the Throne Room, the music pulls me into a trance that I can't help but fall for - it's that powerful, to me. I choose not to analyze, and clearly prefer to just FEEL the music and its energy coursing through me.

well, music is simply a 'soundtrack' to lyrics, so i clearly second 'just getting into it'. and what for their lyrics... i mean, read 'A looming resonance'. it's like... wow.

Well, I think every artist (maybe not absolutely *everybody* but you understand) can be analyzed properly but still be taken down to a very emotional level. It really is a matter of perspective.

Perhaps that's what I need to do - after all, I don't think anyone would consider WITTR a band that seeks to have its music analyzed down to the very last detail. I guess it's more about the overall vibe and atmosphere, but as a musician I can't help but lament the fact that the songs could be so much more effective had they taken a different approach.

Well, I'm sure the songs are structured exactly as they want them to be. I mean, it's all a matter of perspective. I don't think much about how the songs are technically structured while I'm listening to them. I just *get* into it; completely accepting it and stripping away from everyday life. It's a sweet ride, I'm enjoying the moment and I think of all the other little things when it's already over. 'Hey, the riffing in Ex Cathedra is pretty awesome'.

Don't get me wrong - I love the "more direct and aggressive style". It showcases a different side of what the band can do when tweaking their overall formula, and I appreciate the changed approach. However, I believe the drop in songwriting quality comes from the parts where the band chooses to simply stop a riff, pause for 10 seconds of "ambience", and then continue on a totally unrelated progression without bothering to link the two in a way that could be meaningful - this particular example is from Ahrimanic trance. I feel that many of the songs are absolutely fantastic 5-minute snippets that they decided to repeat and fill up with less-than-stellar riff material. Maybe I just need to step back and not think about the music so much, and maybe "Two Hunters" spoiled me, but that's my take.

They chose a more direct and aggressive style with Black Cascade. That doesn't mean they've displayed a drop in songwriting quality. I still have Black Cascade in high regards and I'd say it's their best effort so far. I really like how Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog starts out, I'm always thinking it's a very dark song, but when the first riff starts on Ahrimanic Trance it goes even darker. And that acoustic interlude in Crystal Ammunition reminds me a lot of Diadem of 12 Stars (album). Not to mention how great and trippy the outro is. I think it's flawless, but I completely understand why some people like Two Hunters more. I don't know, maybe I'm just a complete sucker for this band.

what is the reason to say they display a huge drop in songwriting quality?

It's quite a shame that Black Cascade displays a huge drop in songwriting quality from the masterful Two Hunters. Nevertheless, there are still some very enjoyable parts (the first five minutes of Ahrimanic Trance in particular). It just seems to me that they got a bit lazy.

They've made their political views pretty obvious in interviews; it doesn't take much research to track a few of them down.
