Helsinki, Finland (2004 – present)

Founded by ex-Ensiferum frontman Jari Mäenpää in Helsinki, Finland in 2004. Wintersun is a Finnish Metal band with an array of influences ranging from (but not limited to): Power Metal, Folk Metal, Melodic Death Metal and even Progressive Metal (although the exact genre is debatable).

Jari has spoken about the genre of Wintersun’s music, and says “Well it´s difficult to put into a certain genre, cause there’s lots of variation. But to describe it, I would say something like: Extreme Majestic Technical Epic Melodic Metal.” He has also stated “But it’s really not death metal. It’s very difficult even for me to label it, but if somebody would put a gun on my forehead, I would probably say something like Extreme Melodic Majestic Metal.”

The first Wintersun album, “Wintersun” was scheduled for recording early in 2004 a time frame which clashed with the Ensiferum European tour. Jari Mäenpää was forced to choose between his booked recording time for Wintersun, or the Ensiferum tour; he chose Wintersun and was forced to leave Ensiferum behind.

The album was released on September 13, 2004 through Nuclear Blast Records.

Wintersun’s self titled album was produced solely by Jari Mäenpää himself, with only a session drummer (Kai Hahto) to perform the drums and percussion. Jari performed the vocals, bass, guitars and programmed the synth on his own. Indeed, the album was conceptualised purely as a solo project in tandem to Ensiferum (evident by the fact that the Wintersun album bears Mäenpää’s name on the front).

The 2000 midi tracks always don't do justice to the songs. Sometimes it feels like there's more gravy (midi) than steak (actual instruments).

i would trade all of those midi layers for some better guitar and drum tones

Time I being just decently produced? Compare this to the average black metal band. Hell, compare this to the average metal band period. Time I is amazingly produced compared to its peers, and the mixing is nothing short of stunning. It's harder to balance all those layers and keep them audible than you'd think, Nordpolar.

I can't believe so many people mock and complain about this wonderful band. People seem to have a way of ruining beautiful things on the internet.

I hate waiting for this album again, but if it's at least as good as Time I, I won't have any further complain. So take your time Jari, and make a piece of art, again !

Jari Mäenpää Wintersun 17 mins · Here´s the reality. TIME I & II and even couple of the next albums would have been out already, if I would have a studio. BUT I don´t have a studio. Studio is like an instrument of making music and I don´t have that instrument, so it´s pretty fucking hard to make albums, especially as complicated as the TIME albums are. TIME II is in good place mixwise, it´s sounding pretty damn spectacular, but there are still some difficult obstacles I´m battling with. Tuska Festival weekend is coming and I´m gonna get wasted! I´ve been working nonstop since January (and not just the TIME II, new material and there´s some other new things boiling under as well). So don´t come ask me at Tuska "when´s TIME II coming out?" hahah! Unless you buy me a beer!

He wants to accomplish the mixing of the albums himself so he doesn't need anyone to make them sound the way he wants to and I can totally understand that. In the long run he might be able to get the job done just as quick as others. Win-win situation right there.

I didn't say u said that. That was just a reply to that "but so do a lot of people" of yours. I've seen the SoWaS project, yes, but I still can't comprehend why he isn't just picking one really good producer to accomplish a great result in "shorter" time. I didn't even say I'm angry about him taking so long, it's just that I can't see any point in him producing it all by himself except of his perfectionism. Problem is, "Time I" isn't that well-produced. It's okay at best.

Who said he isn't concentrating on Time II? He's written all that stuff since 2006. You might not know any band with these problems because very few are mixing it themselves on very underpowered gear, good luck taking this stuff to a studio. Have you watched the video of SoWaS project? May give you an idea. When did I say 'famous bands'? hmmm

umosay: Aha. Do they? I don't know any "famous" band having these problems, sorry.
