Helsinki, Finland (2004 – present)

Founded by ex-Ensiferum frontman Jari Mäenpää in Helsinki, Finland in 2004. Wintersun is a Finnish Metal band with an array of influences ranging from (but not limited to): Power Metal, Folk Metal, Melodic Death Metal and even Progressive Metal (although the exact genre is debatable).

Jari has spoken about the genre of Wintersun’s music, and says “Well it´s difficult to put into a certain genre, cause there’s lots of variation. But to describe it, I would say something like: Extreme Majestic Technical Epic Melodic Metal.” He has also stated “But it’s really not death metal. It’s very difficult even for me to label it, but if somebody would put a gun on my forehead, I would probably say something like Extreme Melodic Majestic Metal.”

The first Wintersun album, “Wintersun” was scheduled for recording early in 2004 a time frame which clashed with the Ensiferum European tour. Jari Mäenpää was forced to choose between his booked recording time for Wintersun, or the Ensiferum tour; he chose Wintersun and was forced to leave Ensiferum behind.

The album was released on September 13, 2004 through Nuclear Blast Records.

Wintersun’s self titled album was produced solely by Jari Mäenpää himself, with only a session drummer (Kai Hahto) to perform the drums and percussion. Jari performed the vocals, bass, guitars and programmed the synth on his own. Indeed, the album was conceptualised purely as a solo project in tandem to Ensiferum (evident by the fact that the Wintersun album bears Mäenpää’s name on the front).

v your right i didn't include that in my statement because not every artist writes what they want due to pressure from fans or labels. Which is one reason why i hate fans that try to rush the band to get the music done earlier, i'd rather a band take their time and fix/re-record problems that would help make the album sound better. Though i think Jari takes it a little extreme to 'take your time with the album' thing. He would do better to take his time with other albums once he starts gaining more revenue so he can write the way he wants. I applaud the label for letting him take his time but i'm sure the execs are antsy about Jari finishing the album so they can start the promotion process.

"but the artists write what they want, not what individuals want". I can't state for ALL artists but a lot of them follow the musical trend, created by what the people want. For instance in 1991 when grunge took over the scene producers asked Manowar to make a new album "less heavy" because heavy metal wasn't living its best days. And now look at those piles of indie-rock-pop-whatever music band that spawn everyday. Where do they come from? The trend, the demand, created by people, Those are examples of how people affect what artisits write.

I hate when people are rude to the artists, especially when it's the artists that provide the music and do most of the hard work. All fans have to do is fork over $10-15 (and some just download music without paying for it) to get a cd that they had almost no influence over and they get upset when they don't like what they hear. I can understand being upset over losing money but the artists write what they want, not what individuals want. Anyway yeah anything Jari does is steller i don't think he needs to make his music "perfect" because there is no perfect music when you are putting it up for show for everyone that has different tastes.

I've seen actual discussion in some bands FB (Ne Obliviscaris) and usually its a riot. Its just a shame that people bomb the artists instead of their local venues. Even though jaris material is pretty stellar, i think he should be a bit more forgiving to himself. When he was asked if he wanted to change anything about time 1, he said "pretty much everything". At first i thought that that was a joke, but then again... Lets just hope that after this whole time thing he decides that things are good as they are now instead of taking an even bigger project than time to his hands.

That was a shoot for Terrorizer or some other zine Finnish metal scene story. With Turisas, Fintroll and someone else, Korpiklaani. So it wasn't anything new for Wintersun. A lot of shithe will be spilled on Jari again but not that we can change anything as we know, so we wait.

Sheesh, 2015? Jari is bad at finishing his albums in a timely manner, i have been holding out listening to Time I to avoid the album going stale so i could listen to Time I and II together.

My guess is summer 2015. If it comes earlier, i'm more than pleasantly surprised. I have no idea what jari was doing with that camera, since the earlier photoshoots were done by professionals? And paulo, you're just confirming my point about brazilians with your shit.

Yeah, I don't think it will be out this year, but Jari has been hinting at photoshoots recently or something like that. Been so long since we first heard TWOTF and still no studio version haha, kinda restraining myself from listening to it.

Come to Poland & Come to Brazil are 2 plagues of FB but I think no one expects any real discussion on FB anyway so just take that as informational noise. Meanwhile, I start thinking 2014 is slowly getting out of release perspective. Sad, still doesn't change my astronomical anticipation level.

Totally legit to play the "U R stupid" card without much effort here as your shout wasn't more than pointless rambling after all. Congratulations on the finding of a spelling error though. o:)

As i said, these are my own experiences, whats wrong with that? Nice that you aren't even trying to prove me wrong, instead you just play the usual "ur a stupid idiot" card. And i can't even describe the irony in that you misspelled intellectual.
