Helsinki, Finland (2004 – present)

Founded by ex-Ensiferum frontman Jari Mäenpää in Helsinki, Finland in 2004. Wintersun is a Finnish Metal band with an array of influences ranging from (but not limited to): Power Metal, Folk Metal, Melodic Death Metal and even Progressive Metal. Ultimately melodic death/power metal.

Jari has spoken about the genre of Wintersun’s music, and says “Well it´s difficult to put into a certain genre, cause there’s lots of variation. But to describe it, I would say something like: Extreme Majestic Technical Epic Melodic Metal.” He has also stated “But it’s really not death metal. It’s very difficult even for me to label it, but if somebody would put a gun on my forehead, I would probably say something like Extreme Melodic Majestic Metal.”

The first Wintersun album, “Wintersun” was scheduled for recording early in 2004 a time frame which clashed with the Ensiferum European tour. Jari Mäenpää was forced to choose between his booked recording time for Wintersun, or the Ensiferum tour; he chose Wintersun and was forced to leave Ensiferum behind.

The album was released on September 13, 2004 through Nuclear Blast Records.

Wintersun’s self titled album was produced solely by Jari Mäenpää himself, with only a session drummer (Kai Hahto) to perform the drums and percussion. Jari performed the vocals, bass, guitars and programmed the synth on his own. Indeed, the album was conceptualised purely as a solo project in tandem to Ensiferum (evident by the fact that the Wintersun album bears Mäenpää’s name on the front).

Yeah, The Way Of The Fire is definitely the best WS song by far, that's why I (and many others I'd believe) still bother to wait for Time II.

We have heard a single song, The Way of the Fire has been out for ages (albiet live version) and is probably the best WS song to date. You must not have been keeping up to date if you can't find the reasons why Time II isn't out yet.

Sometimes I wonder what the hell this guy is doing in his life... seriously it's already been two years and a half since "Time I" (which was a colossal disappointment) and we still haven't heard the sequel, not even a single song...

Didn't really suprise me that Kai would be sitting out some tours with Wintersun since he will be busy Nightwish for a while now. Still Time II feels so far away now..

No interest in this band anymore. Jari is acting like a spoilt child.

Can't blame him, probably had enough of Jari's crap at this point too. He's been very patient! For me addition of Floor and Kai on the upcoming album has sparked a renewed interest in Nightwish. So kinda looking forward to that.

I hope that Nightwish album is worth it :P Last song is 24 minutes long. Could be a while before we see any new Wintersun material at any rate.

A Finnish magazine called Soundi confirmed that Kai Hahto will depart from Wintersun (for now) to focus on Nightwish. The drummer on the upcoming tours will be Timo Häkkinen from Sotajumala, who (although maybe lacking the creativity and diversity of Hahto) is a fucking beast behind the kit as well. Said Jari: "We have nothing to worry about, Timo is a really great drummer"
