Biography

Helsinki, Finland (2004 – present)

Founded by ex-Ensiferum frontman Jari Mäenpää in Helsinki, Finland in 2004. Wintersun is a Finnish Metal band with an array of influences ranging from (but not limited to): Power Metal, Folk Metal, Melodic Death Metal and even Progressive Metal. Ultimately melodic death/power metal.

Jari has spoken about the genre of Wintersun’s music, and says “Well it´s difficult to put into a certain genre, cause there’s lots of variation. But to describe it, I would say something like: Extreme Majestic Technical Epic Melodic Metal.” He has also stated “But it’s really not death metal. It’s very difficult even for me to label it, but if somebody would put a gun on my forehead, I would probably say something like Extreme Melodic Majestic Metal.”

The first Wintersun album, “Wintersun” was scheduled for recording early in 2004 a time frame which clashed with the Ensiferum European tour. Jari Mäenpää was forced to choose between his booked recording time for Wintersun, or the Ensiferum tour; he chose Wintersun and was forced to leave Ensiferum behind.

The album was released on September 13, 2004 through Nuclear Blast Records.

Wintersun’s self titled album was produced solely by Jari Mäenpää himself, with only a session drummer (Kai Hahto) to perform the drums and percussion. Jari performed the vocals, bass, guitars and programmed the synth on his own. Indeed, the album was conceptualised purely as a solo project in tandem to Ensiferum (evident by the fact that the Wintersun album bears Mäenpää’s name on the front).

Qyaffer, Nightwith is nothing without Tarya. It's so pop now.

He said he's not going to leave StS but he won't be able to play live, probably a similar thing with Wintersun, he won't actually leave.

What about Swallow the Sun? He just recorded the last album, or is he going for stages with them?

I think for Kai it might be (this is pure speculation on my part of course) a combination of schedule problems and the general direction Jari's projects seem to be heading to. I'm telling you, Kai Hahto is a very blue collar, doing-the-dirty-work kinda guy who is all about the music. It's probably not so much about what pays better although that may be a nice bonus.

I'm sure being in Nightwish pays much MUCH better than being in Wintersun. Also probably more enjoyable considering Wintersun is very relatively inactive.

Do you guys really think Kai can leave Wintersun? D:

Yeah :S Especially his "new music in 2015? hmm..." comment, that's a killer... let alone wait for a studio to be built. He also said he's working on music every day so I really have to wonder what, given he supposedly can't work in those conditions. I mean, SURELY he can find an alternative to finish Time II first at least, it's like reamping guitars is a space mission or something.

Yeah, I wish all the best for Kai. He's a phenomenal drummer and deserves recognition, as well as being one of the most friendly and down-to-earth musicians you'll ever meet. If he leaves, I wonder what they'll do about the gigs that are scheduled for next year, hmm... It's really sad that only a year ago it seemed like WS is back on track and coming alive: tours were going very well, Time II was said to be out surely in 2014, everyone was having fun. They were like a real band, not just Jari and some session musicians... And now the band has fallen back to silence, starting to fall apart even. It's like a dying body laying somewhere unnoticed, desperately gasping for the last breaths before falling inevitably to oblivion. haha...

New Year's Eve is quite precise  Wouldn't be surprised if Kai at least couldn't tour - NW tours go for years, but he deserves the big stage... and playing NW is a lot nicer on his body than the rigors of Wintersun.

Good and bad news coming on New Year's Eve. Kai leaves the band for Nightwish?

I'd donate if he let me stay at the house whenever I wanted to, for however long I want. Co-signer and all that.

Having long since grown out of enjoying this kind of schmaltzy metal, I have to say it's pretty ridiculous what Maenpaa is asking from his fanbase. The man needs to go "work at the post office"/ get a real job, save up over time, and then realistically try to bring his musical aspirations to life with whatever means he has (countless bands have made better music with much less). It will be ludicrously entitled and delusional if they actually go through with asking for a "personal studio/ sauna" (which doesn't even confirm the creation/ release of any new music).
