Helsinki, Finland (2004 – present)

Founded by ex-Ensiferum frontman Jari Mäenpää in Helsinki, Finland in 2004. Wintersun is a Finnish Metal band with an array of influences ranging from (but not limited to): Power Metal, Folk Metal, Melodic Death Metal and even Progressive Metal (although the exact genre is debatable).

Jari has spoken about the genre of Wintersun’s music, and says “Well it´s difficult to put into a certain genre, cause there’s lots of variation. But to describe it, I would say something like: Extreme Majestic Technical Epic Melodic Metal.” He has also stated “But it’s really not death metal. It’s very difficult even for me to label it, but if somebody would put a gun on my forehead, I would probably say something like Extreme Melodic Majestic Metal.”

The first Wintersun album, “Wintersun” was scheduled for recording early in 2004 a time frame which clashed with the Ensiferum European tour. Jari Mäenpää was forced to choose between his booked recording time for Wintersun, or the Ensiferum tour; he chose Wintersun and was forced to leave Ensiferum behind.

The album was released on September 13, 2004 through Nuclear Blast Records.

Wintersun’s self titled album was produced solely by Jari Mäenpää himself, with only a session drummer (Kai Hahto) to perform the drums and percussion. Jari performed the vocals, bass, guitars and programmed the synth on his own. Indeed, the album was conceptualised purely as a solo project in tandem to Ensiferum (evident by the fact that the Wintersun album bears Mäenpää’s name on the front).

Realistically I think the best case scenario is to purchase a property in the countryside nearby a small village or town where the real estate is fairly cheap, maybe nearby a lake, forest or mountain. Since Jari claims to already own most of the equipment needed to turn the house into a studio, really it's mostly a matter of finding a property in the peace and quiet of the countryside in order to record without any sort of disturbing noise or neighbors. That's going to be what's needed the most, and unfortunately that's going to be very expensive. It's a matter of trying to make this a reality using as little money as possible. If you look at some Finnish real estate websites there are some properties out in the middle of nowhere for under 100'000 Euros, but something under 60'000 is more realistic budget wise. But does the studio need to be in Finland? Maybe it would be best to look for alternative, international options where property might be cheaper if at all possible?

v Would say definitely plan on building from scratch, Jari did say 'the middle of the forest' haha. 8000 likes in one week though, I'm sure if they ran the campaign for a decent time it would get a lot of backers.

I wondering if they are planning to build a new building for their studio or move in to a existing building. Building a new building for scratch isn't cheap for sure..

I just hope that after this is done he can begin releasing albums on a yearly basis to make up for lost time (no pun intended).

Yeah I think it's all or nothing for Jari at this point, like he says himself. Either the funding succeeds and everything's amazing or then it won't and I guess we won't hear much about Jari after that... :/ So when the time comes let's support him as much as we can!!

yeah indeed. Show us the perks so we can pre-order! I hope they will get more likes and start the campaign. Seems like if it don't Wintersun will die :/

@DesunotoK That's actually a good point. I doubt they plan on actually building a new foundation, but rather buying a pre-existing one and modifying it to work as a studio. I personally for some strange reason thought they would be building a new foundation, must be because of those photos from the movie set where they were dressed as construction workers. P.s. No need for name calling.

Where does he say he needs a sauna? I can't find any information on that. And as for the crowdfunding situation and what Jari said about not being as productive as Devin Townsend: I remember some guys going on about it saying they can't take Jari seriously because he's asking for financial support. I remember Devin doing a crowdfunding with Casualties of Cool and everyone seemed kinda fine with it. So it appears to me with the popularity of crowdfunding possibilities it's only logical some artists want to jump on the bandwagon to fulfill their vision outside of the boundaries of a label. I might be wrong about this, but if you're not okay with investing money for upcoming projects, just let the matter rest. It doesn't seem to me that Jari is some kind of mad perfectionist that needs to bathe in a golden tub and I don't understand the sentiments some people have at all.

I will back this with as much as I can. Don't care about the wait, obviously it will go as Jari decides and no other way around. Thought about how much time he will need to actually construct the studio but oh well.

I don't know if that whole thing with the sauna is real or not, if it is I do think that is a little far-fetched, but regardless I am upset at how people are looking at this whole thing. People are acting as though Jari is stealing money from fans but that wouldn't the case because we are investing in not only the album, but other perks as well. The bottom line is that they are going to give something in return. It is up to us as individuals to decide whether or not it's worth investing in. I would pre-buy the album + track stems because I find value in that. So people need to realize that this is not donation but rather an investment.

It seems that he doesn't need just a studio but whole apartment including sauna, kitchen and living room... That's crazy! And how much it would really cost? 1 million? I hope that he could mix time II without the studio, otherwise, we may have to wait a few years before we get it...

I'm going to wager on this studio helping Jari release many albums at a much faster pace. It is totally worth it in my opinion. Especially that we can actually get our hands on the stems to play with the mix, I think that alone is incredible !!!! I'm really excited for this to get going. I've waited for more Wintersun for so long, and I am willing to wait longer and give my support because I feel it is worth it.
