13 Dec 2010, 17:58 by warrenwheel2010 was a year in music that many claim to be a poor year for releases, but I happen to think these individuals didn’t try hard enough. Sure, there were the big releases by Kanye, The National, and Arcade Fire that many are drooling over, but there was also a whole slew of releases less publicized or, perhaps simply, less heard that deserved recognition.
For me, 2010 was a year of music mostly focused on finding new electronic-based pop, chillwave, lo-fi, glo-fi, and witch house artists. There was a touch of psychedelic rock, shoegaze, and post-rock thrown in throughout the year. You can see the most common tags of my top 50 artists from the last year below.
Let’s get to the good stuff…

A Night with P the M
The Troubadour was jam-packed with fervent fans and skinny jean wearing stick figures in retro stripped tees and excessive wrist decorations. Loud-mouthed individuals crammed their floundering bodies against one another towards the scrawny black stage heaving in band apparatus and musical mechanisms.
The sapphire sign above the stage glowed with brilliance as the lights became dimmer and Flobots invaded the platform. The cluster of hip-hop indie rockers from Denver, Colorado keyed up the audience with their funky mishmash of jazz-soaked crescendos and string-possessed melodies while emcee Johnny 5 released beats of originality ricocheting off the walls throughout the sold-out venue.

Portugal the Man performed at the Troubadour in Hollywood March 21st with a remarkable opening line up of Flobots, Wild Orchid Children and Foxy Shazam. I was lucky enough to catch an interview with the quintet and its “fresh face” Ryan Neighbors, the bands additional member and keyboardist. We gathered around upstairs in a muggy room as we plopped our bodies beside one another. I introduced myself allowing them to shake my clammy palms and began the interview.
Kimberly: How did the band come together and how did you decide to go in this type of musical direction?
Zach: Well, we all came together at different points really. John and I have been friends since we were younger.

A week before hand I sent out the text asking if anyone wanted to come with me to the show. No takers. The only person that I know that likes this genre (how do you classify a genre anyway...) bails because he has homework. An hour before hand still no takers and I've classified my friend as a loser and have sworn my revenge on him for making me go alone. But for Portugal. The Man? Yes. I will go alone.
I get there around 8 (doors were at 7:30) and spot the set list times has Red Orange Yellow starting now. Looking at the stage.... that cleary is not going to happen. I scope the scene and feel under dressed around a good amount of girly girls. The majority of the place was filled with guys anyway, and once the music started I wouldn't care either way.
Eventually the local band Red Orange Yellow takes the stage and I'm interested in hearing them since I (mistakenly) think…
