Radiohead's Kid A; Arcade Fire's Funeral; Coldplay's Viva la Vida; and finally Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. All great albums that left me with the reaction of, "What the fuck was that?" Then I'll listen to the album all the way through again a week later while I'm on a road trip, then I'll listen to it again while I'm working, then I'll listen hear random songs on shuffle while I'm at the gym. Then a few weeks later it hits me and I say, "This is fucking brilliant!" I think music that is shallow, and shoves a message down your throat the first time you listen to it is a slap to an intelligent audience. Great artists like Wilco give their audience credit and trust their audience enough to to listen without expectations and appreciate the depth of the their art.

I see some people are comparing this and In the Aeroplane...which is fair, both have brilliant lyrics, and lack a wasted note or word. Both are challenging and tell their stories in very unique ways. I think it just comes down to preference, do you like lo-fi, fuzzy production or clean(er) production? Also, I still think YHF is a little bit darker, despite the up-beatness of Kamera and Heavy Metal Drummer. ITAOTS seems like one mans soul pouring out, while YHF is a band coming together to make a masterpiece. God, they are both so good.
